ABS light ON???

The ABS light on my 97 Grand Cherokee comes on and stays on. If I turn the
engine on and off a couple of times it goes turns off any ideas?? If it
makes any difference this is the first time for this and today we're getting
heavy rains, tail end of Francis. Thanks guys this group has always been
helpful. Terry

Odds are the ABS computer connector is full of junk and needs a good cleaning.
http://members.cox.net/wilsond/Fixes/computer-abs.jpg

Take the connector off, take the backshell off, spray it with TechClean or
similar contact cleaner, pack the connectors with dielectric grease then slap
it back together.

Watch the contact cleaner as it will eat paint. I find it easier to work over
the air filter box and use a plastic bag and paper towel to collect debris.

Re: ABS light ON???

Problem with the ABS system, if the ABS light stays on then the ABS function
is disbled but the brakes will still work normally. Could be a wheel sensor
(cheap) or the ABS control unit (not cheap). If you've had all that rain I'd
suspect a wheel sensor plug got some water in it.

Re: ABS light ON???

It can be one of two things, and is probably one or more speed sensor on the
wheels, but could be the valve body that routes the brake fluid to the
wheels.

It depends on when the ABS light comes on. If you start the car and the
light comes on with the key, but goes out after a few seconds, then comes
again BEFORE you start moving, this normally means one of the selonoids in
the valve body is toast. On my BMW, the valve body is about $1000. If the
light comes on with the key then goes out, then comes on again AFTER you are
moving, then you have lost a speed sensor in one of the wheels.

Be wary of the speed sensors because they are susceptible to poor electrical
connection, but are often replaced at a cost of about $100 each - again,
pricing from my BMW - when they often will work again if they are just
unplugged and plugged back in. Perhaps a shot of contact cleaner while they
are unplugged ...

When I still had ABS, my ABS check light illuminated due to road grime/tar
that had collected on the ABS sensor on the front driver's side brake
assembly. Cleaning it off with a rag and WD-40 cured it.

Re: ABS light ON???

Did you unplug the sensor(s) and take it to the bench to work on it?

If so, I suspect the particles that collected on it were not the problem.

My BMW had those particles too, and I cleaned them in place and the problem
remains. That is, the lead was long enough that I brought the WD40 over to
the car in my attempt to clean the sensors, and could accomplish the task
without disconnecting the sensors. I need to repeat the job, but this time I
need to actually unplug the sensors at the connectors.

My ABS light will go for days without coming on, other times it will come on
within 20 of begining to roll. I once noticed the ABS light came on in
Reverse ...

I have had the light go on in my other cars (non Jeep) and each time it was a
little plug that plugs into the brake pedal. It just shakes loose and doesn't
make contact anymore.
