'98 Cherokee Fuel Gauge

My fuel gauge occasionally sits at empty when I start the engine.
when that happens, all other gauges on the dash work properly. After
awhile the gauge correctly goes to what the tank level is. If the tank
is half-full and I fill it, the gauge goes up to full. I get the idea
that the float in the tank is 'sticking'.

Any ideas?

Thanks
