97 Wrangler Check Engine light
 

I have a '97 Wrangler, 27000 miles on it, and the check engine light came
on recently when the car was pretty heavily loaded (it's a 4 cyl). I've
tried the ignition key cycle trick from
http://www.sierrajeep.com/trouble.htm to read the error code, but it just
doesn't work for me - the check engine light never blinks error codes like
the page says. Does the trick only work for older Jeeps? Is there any way
for me to read the error code myself?

Hi Modemch,
There's about a six month period the ignition switch sequence
doesn't work and you must buy OBDII scanner to read it. Try it again,
this time give it enough time to run the self diagnostics, before you
give up, and switch it again.

There's about a six month period the ignition switch sequence
doesn't work and you must buy OBDII scanner to read it. Try it again,
this time give it enough time to run the self diagnostics, before you
give up, and switch it again.

What do you mean by "give it enough time to run the self diagnostics"?
I don't recall seeing anything like this on the sierrajeep page, when does
it run the diagnostics - in between the last ignition switches?

Like you give your computer time to boot up after you switch it on.
The switch ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON sequence must be completed within five
seconds, then wait for it to complete it's tests.
