'96 Grand Cherokee Transfer Case

I have a '96 GC, the transfer case is a 249J w/272 gear ratio. Is this
transfer case compatible over several model years? I am interested in an
NP249 transfer case from a '98 GC with a 5.9L engine. The '96 has a 5.2L
engine.
