Actually, your YJ does have a speedo cable. Probably dirty or rusty
inside and needs to be cleaned or replaced.

Before you do anything, check the length of the cable for any breaks in
the casing. Not long ago mine broke loose from its underbody clips and
melted on the exhaust, causing erratic needle movement on the dial. I
simply cleaned the wound, taped it up, and re-clipped it to the
underbody. Works fine now.

the speed sensor is on the tcase and sometimes the t case has a plastic gear
that wears out so if you pull the sensor out index it before removing it and
look in the tcase with mirror to make sure the drive gear is not stripped out

that wears out so if you pull the sensor out index it before removing it and
look in the tcase with mirror to make sure the drive gear is not stripped out

That brings up another issue. The mount for the speed sensor is an
eccentric, the gear isn't mounted to a pin in the center, the pin is off
center to accomodate different gear sizes. If somebody pulled the sensor out
at some point, and put it back wrong, then the gear will not mesh well, and
the speedo can cut in and out. This would be bad for the teeth too.
