'93 ZJ U-Joint Lubrication
We have a '93 ZJ with V-8. The Jeep is 12 years old with 90,000
miles. A couple of years ago it started to have a roughness that comes and goes. I have eliminated tires and balance as a source. Also the motor mounts have been replaced. Now I am looking at the U-Joints as a potential. Although the service manual says they are lubricated for life, what is life? It seems like 12 years and 90,000 miles would justify taking them apart and re-lubricating them. There is one other thing after U-Joints. The Jeep dealer said there might be a problem in the torque converter. Don't recall what component was suspect, but it was not an inexpensive repair. |
Re: '93 ZJ U-Joint Lubrication
Hi ----,
Replace them all, including the ones on your front axles. Would you believe Jeep used to be a utility vehicle that used zerk fitting even on their door hinges. It's the gas saving lock up torque convert that gave the problem, when it's failing your engine will die every time you come to a stop, like you didn't release the clutch. Re: '93 ZJ U-Joint Lubrication
Thanks Bill. I will do that right away. It looks like there are two
on the rear drive shaft, two on the front drive shaft, and one on each end of the front axle for a total of six.. ---- On Sat, 02 Oct 2004 12:15:46 -0700, L.W.(ßill) ------ III <----------@cox.net> wrote: >Hi ----, > Replace them all, including the ones on your front axles. Re: '93 ZJ U-Joint Lubrication
one of the many great numbers of things that Krysler did to cheapen and and
compromise AMC's excellent Jeep designs, was to eliminate grease fittings from U-joints. (probaby saved them $1 per car??) That stoopid company never knew what a Jeep was, or what Jeep was for. My 3l8 had a vibration at exactly l600 rpm...and was found to be a defective tail pipe design, which had been pinched by the factory to about l-l/4 inches diameter for no good reason at all. REplaced original with 3" mopar cat=back which solved the vib problem. Your prob. might be the u-joints.....good luck..
