91 YJ Fuel Tank Removal Help
 

I have spent a number of hours trying to lower the fuel tank on my 91
YJ v6 4.0. The shop manual and some other postings on line don't seem
to have an answer to the problem. I have placed a jack under the
skid/tank assembly, removed the 3 front side 1/2 bolts and the 4 rear
side (not the strap bolts), and disconnected the hoses and power
connection. The The skid assembly shifts a bit now, but the whole thing
just wont budge. The tank will not lower even an inch. Just a little
lateral play. The skid has a side flange that is somewhat blocked by
the tail pipe on the right hand side, but by loosening the strap bolts
just a bit I am able to shift it left a bit to clear this. There is no
other visible obstruction preventing it from dropping. I removed the
jack and even yanked on it, but nothing. This jeep is fairly stock, I
just recently picked it up and need to replace the fuel pump. Any
ideas? I am getting pretty frustrated. :-) Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the reply and the exploded view file. The tank is still
stuck, but that has helped me visualize the area better.
Mine is a little different than this diagram. Item number 12 does not
exist. Instead, the skid assembly rises up and outward to the right in
this area with no other bolts. I have determined that this is not the
point of contention however, because by removing the strap bolt nuts I
can lower the entire back end of the skid assembly. The straps even
move around a bit. The entire bottom of the skid does not completely
drop only because of the front side of the straps that t-bar through
the corresponding skid plate holes. It really feels like the plastic
tank itself is somehow bolted to the jeep. Looking at that pdf file, I
do not see anything that should be obstructing from above, and it is
clear from the underside. Like I said, the skid pan should fall right
down if the 2 little t-bar parts of the straps on the front part were
not holding it on. I have not even lightly knocked on the plastic tank
with a rubber mallet trying to knock something loose. Stumped.

The tank in my 94YJ took some motivating to get out. The rocks pushed the
skid pan and tank up some. Ended up prying on it from both sides to get it
to drop down some. Just have to remember the hoses on top of the tank.
