'91 XJ - tranny problem (?)

I have an all-stock 91 Cherokee Limited 4.0 with automatic (Selec-Trac?)
transmission and 145K miles. After some fairly light off-roading
recently (in "Full Time" and "Part Time High" 4WD), upon return to 2WD
mode, I could no longer move the shifter into "P" or "1-2".
Only after having changed in and out of 4WD a couple of times did I
regain full access to the missing gears, and everything seems
fine now.

Was this incident symptomatic of a developing tranny problem, or is such
issue not atypical and no reason for concern for my vehicle?

Thanks.

That indicates a broken transmission or engine mount to me.
