91 jeep cherokee info
Hows it going i just bought a 91 cherokee and am having some trouble
with the 4 wheel drive. I dont know much about 4 wheel drive in the first place. I would like to know how to shift it in gear and out. What the part time light means. Also the rocker switch for the transmission. I might need to find an owners manual and maybe a service book. Also might be looking for random parts and accesories. Wanna eventually turn into a off road vehicle. Any help by any one will be greatly appreciated. Thanks . |
Re: 91 jeep cherokee info
If yours is like my '98, the "Part Time" lamp tells you that you have
the "Command-Trac" 4WD Transfer Case. See if there isn't a sticker on the headliner, above the driver's sun visor. As my decal (and the owner's manual) says, you should only engage the 4WD on slippery, loose road surfaces. You'll tear-up the system if you engage it full-time on dry paved surfaces. I believe that you should be able to shift in and out of 4WD High "on the fly". For Low Range (are you pulling stumps?), I come to a full stop and shift the transmission to Neutral or Park. Re: 91 jeep cherokee info
I live in Canada and treat the 4x4 'part time' shift just like any
other. When I see a snowy patch coming, I shift into 4 high and keep on going at the speed for snow driving. When I see clear coming, I shift back to 2 wheel drive. I find left turns at snowy intersections can be easier in 2 wheel drive, then shift to 4 coming out of the turn. This is for the command trac or part time system. What does your shifter say on it? If 2 Hi, 4 high, N and 4 low, it is the part time one. If not, you can use the full time system anytime. To shift into or out of 4 low for slow crawling, the best is to be rolling along at 2 mph or so. The 'part time' part of the 4x4 locks the front and rear driveshafts together and only should be used on dirt or snow.
