90 XJ AT Slipping when cold

Hey all, driving to work this morning after about an 8th mile my 4
speed AT started slipping pretty bad. I eased way off the throttle and
put it in first and it stopped slipping, I crawled back home. I called
a very reputable AT repair shop, he had a hard time believing me, he
said the AT is made by Toyota and should be good for 250,000 miles. He
asked me to bring it in and he would take it for a test drive, of
course it didn't slip at all on the way or when he drove it. I drove it
to work with no problems. After a hard days work I drove home and after
an 8th mile it did the same thing, I pulled over and let it warm up and
drove home with no slippage. The fluid level is good , is clean with no
burnt smell ( had it flushed about 15,000 ago). My XJ has 147,000
miles. Am I in for a rebuild for about two grand or would it be ok to
drive after its warmed up?Thanks in advance for your opinions

There has been talk over the last decade or so about the proper transmission
fluid for Chrysler products and the problems caused by the improper fluid
which in some cases was the "DC approved" fluid.

Do you know what they used at your last service?

I'm not sure what fluid you should be using other than it doesn't seem to be
Dextron even though they appeared to accept it as an alternate years ago
(after the ATF + fluids became available

Which transmission do you have?
