88 Cherokee Gas pedal stuck
 

Delurking once again to ask for some help. My Jeep has been sitting for a few
months and when I went to start it up, the gas pedal goes right to the floor.
At first I was able to reach down and manually pull it back up, but now it just
flops back. My Haynes manual doesn't have any kind of an exploded view that I
can find. I'm guessing perhaps there is some sort of spring assembly that is
shot? Can anyone direct me to a schematic or something? I did try lubricating
the cable but that didn't help.

The pedal connects to a cable that runs up to the throttle body, so
you probably have a dirty/corroded cable. You might be able to
salvage it by going under the hood and feeding some of the graphite
based spedometer cable lube into the cable. Disconnect the cable
where it attaches to the throttle body, pull it out as far as you can
and soak the exposed cable. Push it back it and work it a bit.
Repeat the soak and keep working until it's free. Chances are, it's
fouled near the engine end so it should free up pretty quickly. You
might also try using either WD-40 or a rust breaker (PB Blaster,
Liquid Wrench, etc). Don't use a heavier oil or grease - that will
gum up pretty quickly and you'll be back where you started but make
sure you use some of the spedo cable lube after you're done since the
pentrating stuf will just dry out shortly.

came back and has been ok since.

I would be looking at the lever on the throttle body. There is a spring
there, maybe yours broke. Or froze like mine...
