88 4.2 6cy w/weber carb wk551 stalls after long beach drives

I have an 88 wrangler with wk551 carb installed and a holley fuel reg set to
3.5PSI.
On two occasions, the following has happened:

after a long ride on a beach (much engine stress) using low gears 2,3 4, I
get off the beach put the truck back into 2 wheel drive and then the jeep
starts bucking when I hit the gas. It then stalls. I try starting the jeep
and it won't idle. When I try to start it, it always cranks but won't start.
When I step on the accelerator, it chokes. As soon as I let my foot off the
pedal, it revs back to normal rpm then stalls. In order for me to get the
truck going, I have to really pump and release the accelerator pedal
coaching it to run until I get the jeep home.

++ After the jeep sits around for a day or so, really cools down, It starts
and runs great again.

I have changed the fuel filter, fuel pump, verified fuel getting to carb by
disconnecting hose going from fuel regulator to carb and turning over the
engine.

I have verified webber wk551 adjustments. I have checked the timing.
I am trying to figure out how to check vacuum system.
I spray carb cleaner on vacuum hoses and carb base, no reaction.

It seems heat related whatever the problem and usually after low gear
4-wheel drive operation.

Do you have the air filter for the gas tank hooked up? A plugged one
will act like that.

Re: 88 4.2 6cy w/weber carb wk551 stalls after long beach drives

I know with my 4.2L 1989, I have to use premium fuel and octane booster when I
am doing beach runs, otherwise I get that bucking.

I have also found that for whatever reason I get alot of water in the fuel when
I am driving on the beach. A can (or 2 sometimes) of Heet or other water
remover helps.

The air filter is about $2.00 and is on the bottom of the charcoal
canister. It used to be the float bowl vent also before the carb swap.
Lots of folks remove it not knowing what it is.

Without the canister or with a dirty filter, a vacuum builds up on the
gas tank causing the Jeep to starve for fuel. I have had to drive home
from the local mud pit several times with the gas cap cracked open in
order for it to run.
