7 year/70,000 mile Chrysler Jeep warrantee void if towing
 

February 13, 2007: I was towing my 2003 Jeep Wrangler with my motor-
home. We have towed many times and always follow the owners manual: 4
wheel drive in neurtral, standard shift in 1st, key in second
position. We had traveled about five miles when the Jeep just stopped.
I check the 4 wheel drive lever it was not registering 2 or 4 wheel
drive. There is no neautral light. I moved it to make sure it was in
neutral. The jeep now seemed to move. I towed it back to my Jeep
dealer. He diagnosed the engine was shot. The Chrysler DM inspected
the Jeep and said the 7 yaer/70,000 mile warantee was void but he gave
no reason. For the past two month I have been unable to talk to anyone
at Chrysler or receieve a responce to my two letters. The Chrysler DM
refuses to talk to me. On page 180 in the owners manual it states
RECREATIONAL TOWING (behind a motorhome, etc) So why would this void
the warrantee???? I cancelled 2 Chrysler products I had on order.

Any ideas: 1. About what happened to the Jeep????.
2. Why the 7 year/70,000 mile warrantee was void???

I'd take the issue up with an "in your corner" news reporter.

Hmmm, that sounds like the linkage for the t-case isn't adjusted right
or it has a body lift which would throw it out or a broken tranny or
engine mount that would throw it out.

Your moving the shift after and then the Jeep moves again would indicate
that.

Any of those would put it into gear which would turn the engine over
which would seize it.....

Unfortunately I don't think you have a hope of warranty coverage for
this. It is either wear or negligence which caused the shifter to be
out of position.

You are not the first to have posted this happening when towing though....

I put the TC in neutral with the engine running and the transmission in
gear. Then I let out the clutch and verify that the Jeep won't move before
towing it anywhere with my Suburban. That is the only way I can figure out
"for sure" that the TC is in neutral. I have never had any problem although
I must have towed it several thousand miles this way. There doesn't seem to
be any tendency to pop out of neutral once I get it in. The part about the
Chrysler DM not talking to the O.P. sounds downright weird though. Either
the O.P. isn't saying something, or the Chrysler DM isn't.

I met a guy in Gunnison one time, who was towing an Aspen station wagon
behind a motor home with the engine running. and the transmission in
neutral. He said he got 8 mpg on the motor home and 45 mpg on the Aspen
this way.
