6 or 8 cylinders?

I'm interested in a 78 or 79 CJ7. Should I get the 6 cyl or the 304?
Obviously the 304 has more power but I'm wondering how much of a gas guzzler
it is versus the 6. Opinions?

Re: 6 or 8 cylinders?

How are you going to use the Jeep?

-Offroad exclusively?
-50/50?
-All street?

I'd say that unless there is a real reason to get a V8, you're more than
fine with an I6, and better off on the trails because of the superb low
torque qualities of the I6. Now, if you find a prime example of a CJ
with a V8, why hold back? We don't buy these things for mpg anyway. :)

Heh! Well, either one would suit your needs then. I've had four Jeeps
(1CJ, YJ, 2TJs with the I6, not counting two 6 cyl Cherokees, and never
been disappointed in any of them, performance-wise. V8s can be a hoot,
though too.

Personally, my suggestion is to dial in on other stuff that is more
important, like rust and cracks. If you happen to find a good V8, then that
is cool, but don't overlook a quality unit just because it hasn't got the
V8.

Re: 6 or 8 cylinders?

Don't listen to twaldron. We just recently had this argument and he
obviously doesn't know what he's talking about. For a while he was
actually claiming that 6-cylinders had more power than 8's! I suspect
him of being a Greenpeace agent provocateur. ;-)

That being said, however, the 6 is indeed powerful enough for most
applications you are likely to see. The 8 can give you more
acceleration and/or torque. BUT.. you're probably still not going to
outrun most modern cars for applications like merging onto the freeway
ramp. I have one of the few situations which actually poses some
demand for a larger engine: A Scrambler (long wheelbase jeep) with
truck bed that can be used for hauling heavy equipment, as well as
occasional heavy towing. Unless you envision something like that, you
can certainly make due happily enough with a 6.

Fuel mileage on a 6 vs 8 cylinder CJ is the difference between poor
and very poor. If fuel economy/the environment is your biggest
concern, don't buy any Jeep vehicle, esp. not a CJ.

Re: 6 or 8 cylinders?

He is sure starting out that way if he is as young as he says he is and
I think that part is legit.

That's a drag for him...

That kind of attitude sure won't do him well when he grows up.

I have a 19 year old son with some attitude, he also needs to lose it to
grow up.
