4K RPMs @ 50MPH? On *Rebuilt Trans*?
I'm the guy w/the Transmission job, ethical issues concerns with the
shop. I just today picked up my Grand Cherokee '96 from the Shop and on the way home from what was ultimately a $1,750 transmission job (with tax), I could not believe the rev'ing at relatively low speed. Meaning at 50MPH...it seemed to be at the top of a gear, not going to the next...the dang thing was rev'ing at 4,000 RPMs. Do newly installed Transmission need to adjust or something? My drive home was only 3 miles. Any ideas? I'm going to contact the shop of course but I would like to be a bit informed of what I am experiencing. Any clues, tips, hints appreciated. It simply sounds like the transmission isn't going into a higher gear. But jeez...if they test drove the Jeep they should have noticed this. Where should the RPMS be at 50mph on a JGC automatic? Thanks! Andrew The transmission shop is an independent transmission specialist, not a small shop either. In terms of the follow up to my previous post, we settled on a rebuilt transmission, not a remanfuactured, with a 1 year unlimited mileage warranty. $400 labor, $1200 for the reubuilt trans + tax = $1,750. |

It sounds like you are stuck in second gear.

Re: 4K RPMs @ 50MPH? On *Rebuilt Trans*?
yeah i just called the shop and they say it sounds like overdrive did
not "kick in". they told me to test again, drive let off the gas pedal and tap it once while at that 40mph-45mph to see if the drive kicks. they tell me they took it on a test drive too. when traffic dies down (i live in new york city), i am going to take it out and take some data points on what's happening and i guess take the Jeep back to the shop. thanks andrew |

Umm.... Maybe the trouble wasn't with the tranny in the first place...
It has a TPS that controls shift points and a shift computer in there too. The TPS is on the throttle body and is prone to dirty contacts on it's plug and socket. A good clean with a spray contact cleaner is the best, but WD40 will work in a pinch.
