3 wheel drive?
 

i have a '92 jeep YJ wrangler. let's say for the sake of argument that
my front axle disconnect is not working when I engage 4WD HIGH via the
transfer case lever - that is, the front passenger-side axle shafts are
NOT locked together by the sliding collar, but the front differential
IS getting engine power. does that mean the two rear wheels and the
front left WHEEL (singular) are getting power? and that the front right
(passenger-side front) wheel gets no power? isn't that "3 wheel"
drive?

Only if you have a locker in front. Yes, the front shaft is turning, but
with the stock open differential only the disconnected side will turn,
yielding zero 'drive' in the front.

Only if you have a locker in front. Yes, the front shaft is turning, but
with the stock open differential only the disconnected side will turn,
yielding zero 'drive' in the front.

The differential puts 'equal' torque to both wheels. If one is unlocked
from the axle like you state, it gets 0 torque therefore the other side
sees the same 0 torque.

Short answer, nope, only 2 wheel drive with the front axle unlatched.
