258 or 304

Anyone have experience with *both* of these engines? I've had a 304 and
loved it! The three speed wasn't the best,..but I loved the sound and the
power. How does the 258 stand up torque wise and on the highway with 33s? I
don't even know if I've ever heard one.
Thanks
Allen

Re: 258 or 304

I've had both - in fact now I have the 258 with Howell Injection. Even
though the EFI significantly increased the performance it doesn't even come
close to a 304.

I have a CJ7 with a T18, 4:10 gears running 33s. Off road it does very
well. I'm not looking for a road racer so I really don't care how it does
on the road. I can go around 70-75 mph comfortably on the hwy. It's tough
going up steep hills on the hwy or in real strong winds with the 258.

And there is certainly nothing special about the sound....I have flowmasters
(or shall I say **a** flowmaster) so it sounds OK but like you - I love the
sound of the V8

Re: 258 or 304

I loved my 304... and there's just something about a 3 speed that I like...
Only drawback with the 304 is I ripped my back bumper off trying to pull a
stump (too much power or dumbass driver... a little of both)!
That said, I also like my 258 (I have to say that... my CJ might read this
and get pissed)
