2001 GC Laredo - radio upgrade options

We have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
with the combo radio/CD/Cassette

Wondering what's out there that will fit into the dash
as an exact replacement - wiring, bezel, etc
and offer the radio + CD + music data display,
and maybe going toward the HD channels, etc

I doubt very seriously there is any _direct_ replacement that will fit the
wiring. The other stuff can be accomodated.

A "standard" radio is termed DIN <not knowing what DIN is>, then there is
DIN-and-a-half and double-DIN. I don't know which DIN configuration you
have, but the radio guys will. You can measure the verticle space your radio
requires, then match that. The width of the radio is common, the height is
what changes.

Let's say, for example, you settle on a Panasonic radio with all of the
features you want. Odds do not favor the connector being a match with your
car. The radio (Panasonic) you buy will have a connector with leads that are
labeled, and you buy a connector that matches the connector in your car, but
is the same --- as the back of your current radio, and the leads are tagged.
You simply match the tags on the pigtail you buy with the tags on the
Panasonic radio you selected, then plug one end into the vehicle wiring
harness and the other end into the back of your Panasonic radio. It is that
easy.

Easier still, let the Installation Department do the work for you.

Take a look at Crutchfield.com. They have everything you need, along
with instructions for installation. I just put a Sony receiver in our
Jeep Grand Cherokee that I bought from Crutchfield. They are the best
in the business.

I use http://www.crutchfield.com/ to zero in on the products available,
with many reviews, they'll have the adapters, too Then search the number for
best price, and usually buy via Amazon.

Although a bit pricier than much of the competition, the Crutchfield
folks tend to be a bit better than most at fitting aftermarket units
into vehicles. Sort of the electronics version of Tire Rack.
Local specialty auto audio dealers tend to be pretty good as well, but
pricey.

Exact fit. My recommendation is to give up on that idea.

Your decision depends on how much $ your going to part with.

First suggestion is to head to a local stereo store that does
competition audio and check out the "brag book"

Consider
XM radio
iPod
MP3
etc

Along with better speakers, base, amps, tuners, etc.
Beware, it's a slippery slope, stereo... :)
