2000 XJ Won't Start
 

A story first, sorry. Went kayaking Sunday and left the XJ parked by
the creek with a half tank of gas. Paddled downstream a couple of hours
to the wife's 98 ZJ then came back to pick up the XJ. Fuel gauge was on
empty and it wouldn't start. I assumed some bastard siphoned my tank.
Got some gas and put about 2 gals in - still wouldn't start and the fuel
gauge didn't appear to move. The XJ was not level so I pushed it to a
level spot, banged on the bottom of the fuel tank to wake up the fuel
pump - still nothing. I did not hear the fuel pump engage when I turned
the key. It was getting dark so I got it towed. That's the story so
far, any ideas??

Fuel pump wiring pulled, fuse... relay... pump.. in that order.
Sometimes thieves use a battery to pump out fuel if they can't
get the cap off. Takes a while though.

I'd bypass the fuel pump relay and see if the pump kicks on.

note: without a schematic I can't tell you exactly how but on most
fuel pump relays you run a wire between sockets 7 and 9
(sometimes called 30 and 87).. Use the service book to confirm
which ones.. :)

on some and heat affects all of them. They are low power computer pins
and get corroded when old, but still can look ok. They can be cleaned
with a spray contact cleaner electronics shops sell or even WD40 in a
pinch will work.

on some and heat affects all of them. They are low power computer pins
and get corroded when old, but still can look ok. They can be cleaned
with a spray contact cleaner electronics shops sell or even WD40 in a
pinch will work.
