1995 Cherokee Sport Auto Transmission Problem
 

Greetings all,

I have a 1995 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L 4WD.

It seems to be having some trouble getting into second gear from first, the
engine revs high and dosent seem to "let the clutch out" so to speak. This
happens especially when first starting out cold, so I wouldn't think it is
due to worn parts, as it corrects after driving for about 2 minutes.

I had almost the same exact problem about 4 years ago (which got
progressively worse). I took the Jeep to a transmission shop that charged me
alot of money to take the transmission apart, replace a bunch of parts that
didn't need replacing, only to find out that it was just a solenoid. I
would've thought that they could've done some diagnostics to find out the
problem before hand. Lesson learned.

My question to the group is this, does anyone know the technical name for
the solenoid that is the likely culprit? (they called it "Solenoid #2 on the
bill, last time).

Are there error codes that I should read somehow?

I'm not much of a mechanic but I can figure out basic things like changing a
starter motor and brakes, so I'd like to save some money if at all possible.

Same thing again. Better to go to a salvage yard and by a used tranny
than to pay them to fix yours again. The solonoid is inside the
auto-tranny and, if you've got slippage, you need new bands again.
Tranny repair is the worlds biggest ripoff.

BTW, why did you buy a 4wd with an automatic transmission? Feh.

Where do ya live?
Stay away from transmission repair chains.
If there are independent transmission shops, those tend to be somewhat
more honest. Transmission rebuild specialty garages tend to be much
better and one heck of a lot cheaper--however they tend to specialize in
swaps and complete rebuilds rather than repairs.

Pick yourself up a factory service manual if you plan on trying to fix
it yourself--which you may want to do before you burn out a clutch and
have to bike to work.
