1993 2.5L lifter replacement?

I own a 1993 Wrangler with the 2.5l engine. After about 130,000 miles my
lifters are starting to get noisy, especially on those cold mornings.
Being, a only if I have to backyard mechanic I decided to look in my
Chilton's Manual to see how involved of a job it would be to replace the
lifters myself. Chilton's gives a very vague description of how to replace
the lifters. However it doesn't seem like to big of a job they way the show
it. Does anybody know of someplace on the web where I might find more info
for the do-it-yourselfer like me? The way they describe it is basically
pulling the valve cover, pulling the rockers and pushrods, and use a special
tool to pull them (the lifters) out. Is this all I have to do? How hard
are they to get out with the special tool and where might I get this tool.
It seems after looking around, that the lifters themselves are fairly cheap.
For as cheap and a easy as it seems I can't afford not to do it myself. Can
anyone help me out or point me in the right direction?

Hi Cliff,
You have to pull the head to get at the lifters. You say
"especially on those cold mornings." like you have crud in the lifter
valves, causing them to collapse, I would just change oil every one
thousand miles until they clear, then go back to changing every thirty
five hundred miles.

Re: 1993 2.5L lifter replacement?

I've gotta respectfully disagree with you Bill. If they're noisiest in the
morning it's usually because the oil is draining down out of the lifter,
something that happens when they wear and the tolerances increase. Sticking
lifters is usually a single lifter that will collapse, the noise coming and
going with seemingly no pattern.
While removing the head may make the replacement easier, it's not always
necessary. The galley that the pushrods run up in is large enough to pull
the lifter up through. The question is are they going to be difficult to
get out of their bores. If there's very little tarnish on the outside
barrel and the bottom hasn't mushroomed you can pull them out with one of
those stick type flexible magnets. If they're stuck you'll need to get down
to where you can get a solid grip on them to dislodge them. Dropping them
back in is pretty easy with the magnet as well. Same on the 4.0 L.

Re: 1993 2.5L lifter replacement?

I did the lifters on a 2.5 93 YJ last summer and it can be done with
out pulling the head. Be prepared to fiddle a bit and don't expect to
be able to pull them with a magnet like Chiltons says. You will need a
lifter removal tool that pops into the top of the lifter and when it
is tightened down it will clamp on the outer lips of the lifter, even
with this tool the lifters may be a bit hard to pull due to resin
build up. Once they are out drop the new ones in with a dab of lithium
grease on top of the lifter and be sure to replace the pivots and
rockers while your at it ...... tourque everything bake to spec's and
replace the valve cover with a new neoprene gasket. I had never done
this before and I just followed the Chilton or was it Haynes manual
instructions.

It was not complicated at all.....

An example of lifter puller can be seen here.... item 2210
