1990 Jeep Cherokee Ltd.

Help! I have a 1990 Jeep Cherokee Ltd. 6 cyl, 4WD. About a month ago
the vehicle started to shift up and down indiscriminately. When I drive
the vehicle between 25-35 mph it would shift down, rev. the engine,
then shift up only to shift down again immediately. When I drive the
car from a standing start and "put my foot into it" it shifts up
through the gears smoothly and positively. Once I get into high gear at
around 40-45 mph it runs smoothly with no down-shifting. I took the
vehicle to a "transmission specialist" (you'll know the name), After
completely rebuilding my automatic transmission to the tune of $1600.00
I have a transmission that does exactly the same as before it was
rebuilt (It appears as if I didn't need to have the transmission
rebuilt). Someone told me that it may be computer/electronic related
like the fuel sensor? I do not want to take it back to the Transmission
place without first knowing what the problem is exactly! Any
suggestions as to what may be the cause of this? Thanks

Re: 1990 Jeep Cherokee Ltd.

I have had shift problems similiar to yours with my 90 XJ. First clean
clean both plugs that go to the throttle body with contact cleaner, The
square one goes to the throttle position sensor. Also clean the two
larger plugs that are close to the transmission dipstick, they go from
the transmission controler to the tranny. If that doesn't work replace
the TPS, costs about fifty bucks and is an easy fix.
