07-08 Wrangler rear axle noise

Mine's an '08 so it has the Dana 44 diff and I'm thinking that's where the
noise is coming from (it's not limited slip). When I'm stopped at a stop
light with the front wheels turned slightly to the left and do a quick start
and turn, I sometimes get a heavy, loud shuddering noise. (No, it's not in
4-wheel drive.) I've noticed this in a few other Jeeps I've had but they all
had limited slip differentials. I'm wondering if the traction control is
somehow causing this. Haven't been back to the dealer yet because I'd like
to get some opinions here first.

Hi Jack.

My wife has an 06 Grand Cherokee that does the same thing. My thought
was the same as yours, maybe the traction control. It is horribly
noise when it engages on the snow and you put the Jeep into a side
spin and try to correct it, say going to fast around a corner. We also
noticed sometimes it was shifting hard. Out of first, and back down to
first. Its an automatic. Took it to the dealer, and they could find
nothing wrong with it. I know I'm not much help here, but just wanted
to express my experience. Our Jeep is a Limited, with ELSD front and
rear. It is quite lively in the snowy conditions I might say. Good
luck, and Happy New Year to you.

We have an '07, it's got a little over 6000 miles on it now, and I haven't
noticed any sort of noise like this with our's. I'm sure if my wife had
noticed it, she would have said something as she tends to notice the
littlest things when a car does something odd. I routinely get the traction
control light to light up when I drive on the snow but I've never noticed
any noise associated when the light comes on. Sorry I can't be more help.

I wasn't even aware that they had traction control lights. Guess I'd better
get out the owner's manual. Next time it happens, I'll be on the lookout to
see if it lights up. (Mine's also a 6-speed, and BTW it's averaged 19.3 MPG
since I got it about 2500 miles ago - FAR BETTER than my '03 inline 6.)

Re: 07-08 Wrangler rear axle noise

Hi Greg:
I had a '98 Grand with the 5.9 engine and limited slips that did the same
thing my new Wrangler's doing. But it didn't have any of the other symptoms
your '06 has. My '98 was one helluva runner but it gobbled gas and was a dog
in other respects. The dealer "rebuilt" the transfer case twice - at least
they SAID they did (?) - and tried to correct what sounded like squeaky
u-joints. They never did get that fixed, but it finally stopped doing it
after about 6K miles.
Thanx for the reply and you have a good new year too.

We get about the same 18 to 19 mpg around town and driving to work. We had
an '01 TJ with a 2.5L that got the same mileage with a three speed auto in
it. The traction light is right smack in the center of the gauges toward
the bottom. It's a little car with wavy tracks behind it and flashes when
the traction control kicks in. Looks like a slippery road warning road sign
icon.
