'01 Cherokee Sport Poor Gas Mileage

I have a 4.0 2001 Chrokee that gets 13.5 mpg. All Stock, 30k miles,
new tires, dealer says nothing obvious (they want $800 to do the 30k
tune up, of course). I put some fuel injector cleaner in the tank 2
tanks ago and it didn't seem to help. I've never owned one of these,
and it seems pretty loud. It sounds like the autochoke is on most of
the time as it has that loud, "air" type noise that, in other motors,
goes away once they are warm and goes to a finer sewing machine-type
sound. This never goes away- always loud. RMP's are correct though.

Any ideas anyone??

Hmmm....

I get 19 in my old CJ7 and 22+ in my 88 Cherokee....

If you have a vacuum leak, the computer can go full rich to compensate.

Same deal if you have a dead O2 sensor.

Street, highway or overall? On the streets that is about my average as
well on my '98 with 30" tires. These days I mostly drive on the streets
as well and my Jeep is in tip-top shape. On the highway if I can keep
the Jeep under 80MPH I see around 18MPG and if I cruise at the limit,
20MPG....

I'd say you are about on target going by my own numbers...

Jeep's plain and simple are not the best on case, considering their
size. I don't recall the best tank I've had on my XJ's but I do on my
old '96 ZJ (4.0) and that was 24MPG! We took the back roads into Moab,
UT from Camp Hale, CO (near Vail) and we took our time, cruising the
speed limit with cruise control.

Re: '01 Cherokee Sport Poor Gas Mileage

that is not good gas mileage at all......19 to 21 should be on that
model.....in regards to the air noise....does all your vacuum run
accessories work.....like the cruise....does the air conditioner vents all
work in various stages as they should ......if not, then you have an air
leak somewhere.....also have the dealer do a tune up.....as in replace the
plugs and tune the jeep on the computer.....this all has them hooking the
jeep to a computer and flashing the jeep computer to reset new software
in.....all this may help.....about 100 dollars for the basic tune-up and
cheaper with coupons if you can get some.....I got 19 to 20 on my last 2000
mile vacation trip in the WJ fully loaded with my wifes clothes and the
kitchen sink.....after said tune-up and new airfilter...

The WJ I can see getting that type of mileage on the highway. It's not
as much of a brick as the XJ. From what I've seen over the years the XJ
is good for about 20MPG on the highway.

One thing the original poster never said is if his mileage is city or
highway... If he is only getting 12/13MPG on the highway then yeah, I
agree with you about the mileage. On the streets though, that number is
very real, especially if you have a heavy foot.
