I actually think that unless you did a lot of off roading that required articulation(as opposed to trail riding in the woods like I do)you could probably run a 31x10.50 on the stock aluminum rims with only modification of the steering stops. I have seen some that could stuff 10.5's under there with minimal rubbing and others that would peel rubber off the tire with 4 people inside. Rims could be a factor there likely as you mention.
