Low Oil Pressure

HI:

I have an '02 Liberty with 202K and while I was out the oil pressure light came on for the first time. I made sure the oil level was correct but the light is still on. The light is on while at idle but when I am driving it goes out.

Do you have any suggestions on the possible cause and fix to this problem. I am hoping it is a defective oil pressure sensor but would appreciate you thoughts.

Thanks in advance,

Re: Low Oil Pressure

I have no idea what kind of oil and filter you are using but....
In colder weather the oil is sometimes thicker than normal when you first start it, increase engine rpm's slightly when first starting. I would recommend that you get an oil change and new filter and try Mobil 1 5W-30 synthetic motor oil. That will ensure the oil is flowing better in cold weather. Oil filters are an important part of oil flow as well. I use a K&N filter and change the oil at 5000km as well.
If you experience another oil light, replace the pressure sensor.

Re: Low Oil Pressure

Greetings,
Danrob...oil pressure light on usually signifies LOW oil pressure. Could be faulty sending unit, too thin an oil, or shot main bearings. Is the light on when the engine is cold and idling or just when hot and idling? Personally I'm not a big fan of synthetics and if you're currently using Dino-oil, I'd stick with that but if synthetic, stick with that.
