'05 Liberty - Front End Noise? Anybody?
 

Hey all,
Just joined, SO happy to have found some more jeep lovers.
Anyways,
My 05 Liberty makes a crunching/grinding noise when I hit speedbumps...its hard to explain, but it sounds like metal on metal? - I've googled the problem and it sounds like other people are having the same problem...just wondering if anybody's found a final fix for it.

For the record, the lower ball joints were recalled so those were changed, and I had the upper arms inspected/changed as well (the noise is definitely in the front) - some sites were mentioning anti-sway bar bushings, but I also had those checked and okayed...

I love my jeep, but this is eating away at me!! helpp!!

Do you have the stock springs and Struts?
It is very easy to compress the stock spring that has already sagged add in the worn strut and the speed bump is not going to be too great in rebound or clearance.
Take a look at your coils in front while wheel is turned out. You could be close to coil binding, if there is not much room between the loops of the coils.
Consider getting new lifted OME coils and struts. the jeep will handle better and speed bumps will be an easy quiet target.

First off, thanks for the reply

So let me understand this...you're suggesting to change the springs and struts because they could be worn out, meaning the noise is coming from complete compression of both?
Will take your advice, going to research into getting that changed...wanted to keep it at relatively stock height though.

Also, going over bumps on purpose now in the past couple days - it actually sounds like the noise happens on the rebound - that is, when the pressure would be released from the springs/struts...i cant replicate the noise when i push the front end down at all...not even remotely

Does that change the diagnosis? again, I'm pretty much completely in the dark here, just wondering if anyone had the same prob & fixed it...

Spicer makes heavy duty stock springs and Monroe makes stock strut. Good auto parts store can quote.

You will end up with a 2 inch lift as above.
Keep in mind that Jeep did recall the lower ball joints and they should be inspected and I highly recommend if your are keeping the Jeep for safety sake, to also install Moog Lower Ball joints that have the zerk (grease fitting) they are a higher quality than the dealer parts without the zerks and considering out salt road, grease fittings on these parts should have been made mandatory.
