Windshield Problem

I have a 07 JK and live in New England. I was heading to work and the temp was about 10 above and I just turned on the defroster and hit a minor pothole and… POP! goes the windshield starting from the passenger side about 8 inches from the post and cracked to about the same place on the drivers side making a upside down U. Stress crack? I thought so but I the dealership disagreed (surprise)! Pulse no cars were in site.

They said they found a stone bruise and showed me by using a pen and ran it along the crack until it stopped on a spot near the driver’s side. I couldn’t see it with the naked eye but that is there final determination and only after I left the dealership did it dawn on me that it started on the passenger side, no “stone bruise” there!

My question is: has anyone had that happen to you on the JK? I have had 15 Jeeps in the past and every one of them as had a broken windshield at some point but I think this one is flat out stress as I never had one just crack! I knew I would have replace it eventually but not so soon!

Thanks

Re: Windshield Problem

mine has a major crack from the driver's side to the rear view mirror. Same deal happen when I went over a rough road this fall. I asked to have it warrentied but they said since there were numerous chunks missing from rocks/ stones that it wouldn't be covered. oh well I am living with it until next summer when I will get it fixed. No point in getting it done til after the spring when I seem to pick up the most stone chips.

What you fellows don't have full insurance coverage to pay for a new windshield. Here a new ww will cost $600 plus installed so its well worth the extra on the ins. Diff between full and not here is $75.

Re: Windshield Problem

Here in Ontario its not worth windshield insurance. Better off to pay it out of pocket and save your premiums from going up. Problem is insurance companies have to pay $600 to replace it, but the consumer paying on their own will only pay $300 max.

To the OP, if this is your first windshield on an 07 you are very lucky my friend. A small stone chip is all it takes to start a crack. We have 3 JKs in the family and all 3 have cracks. The latest, my daughter bought an 09 and within a week it has a crack (from a stone chip) from bottom drivers side up 4" over to passenger side and back down. These windshields are so straight (up and down) that stones don't deflect off like they do on a car so they are very susceptible to major rock chips. Regular inspection and repair of stone chips can/will stop cracks from starting. The windshield on my Unlimited has one small crack and no less then 10 major chips all stopped by windshield repair to stop them from ------ing. If you know you have chips in the lower windshield area refrain from using the defroster on full heat until a repair can be done as the heat against a cold windshield will cause flex and cracking.
