Tires

Hope you can help . . .

I am new to the Jeep ownwers . . .

Just wondering in the tires that came with my 2010 4door unlimited are fine for the snow AND off roading.

I think I have the #'s on the tires correct.

Please let me know your thoughts!

Re: Tires

I use mine off road but mainlyy on logging trails and abandoned roads. I will be going to Goodyear Dura Tracs next year in a 33" size.

I currently also have a 2010 JKU Sahara with same tires you have.
Got my Jeep in mid March this year so not a lot of snow traveling yet but the little I have encountered the tires did ok.

Re: Tires

2008 Jk Unlimited with same tires and the Limited Slip Diff out back.

-ice packed 401 with a foot of fresh snow = no problem
-deep snow = no problem, and lot's fun :)
-mild trail rides, including mud ect = good
-I'm not big on rock krawlin so can't comment
-wet roads = seems ok.

Nice and easy on the skiny pedal gets you further down the road/trail.

For stock tires they are pretty good, 35Ks and the wear seems very good also. Stay on top of your tire rotations. Like KAVIK I'll be considering the Goodyear Dura Tracks.

Regardless of tires, don't forget to wave!

Re: Tires

I agree all round good tires from my experience.

Re: Tires

If you have a Sahara (Which I suspect due to the 18" wheels) the tire size should be 255/70/18. The stock Bridgestones as Jeepminded said should work well as an "All around" tire. Not strong in any one area, but will work well in most.

Re: Tires

Can't speak from personal experience but my sources (Northern Michigan -aka the UP- members of the North American XJ Association) all advised against running Goodyear Dura Tracs if up against snow. They say they are great tires for rocking and off roading (packed sand, pebble beaches) and I followed them through all of those (with BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO's), but they say they are treacherous in the snow. Figure guys from Northern Michigan might know what their talking about!

Re: Tires

That is not good news .... I did quite a bit of research on them and most listed info rates them excellent in snow (independent sources) , but real life feedback is always better IMHO so this concerns me now....Great info thanks. I will be putting something on for next fall to replace the stock tires....back to the research I guess.

Re: Tires

Don't take this as a recommendation for BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A KO's either! I've never run them in the winter as they come off with the summer rims. I will tell you to stay away from Goodyear Wrangler GS/A's though. They came stock on the TJ and are nightmare in wet and slipper/snowy pavement. Can't wait to wear them out and find something new. Will likely go with Bridgestones. My 2004 GMC 4X4 (Shortbox) Truck came with a set (Duerler AT's) and even worn to a dimes width above the wearbar got me through a southern Ontario winter without a slip! Other replier's are also saying the stock Duelers on their jeeps are working great. Not sure what is stock on them though -still Dueler AT's?

KAVIK 11-12-2010 09:59 AM

Re: Tires

yep duelersA/T's P255/70R18 OWL are stock on them still. The rubi's come with mud terrain t/a's. I have had no issues with the duelers.. Just looking for a bigger tread that still has decent on road manners.

Re: Tires

New Rubi's come with BF Goodrich Mud Terrain T/A's? That will get you an aggressive tread, and if you can get some answers from new Rubi owners as to how they perform in the winter, it would be cheap insurance against buying something that doesn't do what you want. Would be curious to hear, I opted for the All Terrains for fear the Mud Terrains would be noisy (and dicy in the winter -if times got tight and had to bring them out of hibernation), but like you, it was based (mostly) on online research. Only one guy I knew ran Goodrich A/T's but it was on a 3/4 ton Ram Extended Cab 4X4 truck (not a good basis for comparision) but he swore by them and did a lot of pipeline work so he gott'em dirty! Post an inquire on the new jeep forum and lets see what you (we) get for answers.

Re: Tires

I've got a 2010 Rubi. The BFG M/T tires are great in the mud and deep snow but the tires aren't siped. They are just big hard lugs so on anything slick like hard pack or ice they're not going to be any good. I'm trying to make a decision between BFG A/T TA/KO tires, Toyo Open Country M/T's or Dunlop Rover M/T Maxx Traction. If I buy either the Toyos or the Dunlops I wouldn't need the OEM BFG's anymore. My driveway is on a steep grade and the OEM BFG's have already lost grip in the rain!

Re: Tires

Yeah Sipes are a big Must for me with what ever tires I get

Re: Tires

Well here's my 2 cents. I ran the Duelers for about a month in the winter then they came off pretty quick. They are OK on hardpack and not bad on icey roads, but really suck in serious snow. I then ran 2 winters on ProComp Xtreme M/T, very cool tire awesome in deep snow but suck on icey roads once they start to wear. Just switched over to Duratracs and so far they are the best of what I have tried including Dunlops. GY Wrangler Duratracs can also be studded and seem to be the chosen tire in the Jeep community for snow and ice.. Those UP guys may have been talkin about the GY Wrangler MTRs they really suck on icey roads. I will give you a further review on the 35" Duratracs in the up coming weeks...

Re: Tires

keep me posted on it I am still seriously considering the Dura Tracs I have talked to few fellas in the past week who have them and they agree with you as well.

Re: Tires

Will do KAVIK.. We just got a dump of that heavy wet snow today and its not suppose to let up for a few days. I'm sure I'll have a pretty good idea of what these tires are gonna be like within this next few days...

Re: Tires

Boy , I'm really glad about those Goodyears getting good reviews. We've had our 09 Wrangler X for a few weeks now. We bought it preowned with only 18k on it but it had already a 2" lift and 285/70/17 Goodyear Duratracs. One thing about this X too is it was my understanding the X was sort of the "cheaper" model yet it has leather seats , air and the moulded step rail. Also a really awesome stereo from the factory.

Re: Tires

Freezing rain here overnight, roads were glass this morning...the stock duelers did ok but they weren't amazing by any degree.

I think you might be talking about the Goodyear MTR's that are not good in snow.

The Goodyear Duratrac's are amazing in the snow. Check out goodyear's website they are rated 10/10 in the snow. Quebec has a law that everyone living there must use Winter tires during their winters. Well, these tires meet those requirements.

Goodyear Duratracs are all around a great tire!!!

good to hear that. i was going to check their winter tire rating today. I knew about the 10/10 but I wasn't sure if they had the "snowflake in the mountain" symbol. I know that the GY Wrangler Territory do, but I am not considering them anyway.;)

Re: Tires

Well to start I live 50klm out of Thunder Bay up in the hills. The back hwys and sideroads are not maintained as well as main hwys. No salt, just sand on the occasional corner. So far so good. Snowed like crazy today temps just around freezing. No deep snow yet but this heavy wet snow is no problem for the Duratracs, haven't even needed 4wd yet. and traction control light has only come on once on a steep country road. Not bad for a big wide tire and I am impressed with the ride too..

Re: Tires

Checking my facts, and I suspect the Upeers may very well have been talking about an early form of MTR's. The tread pattern of the "new" MTR's most definitely does not match what they were running, which may very well have lead me to believe they were Duratracs. However the pattern of the Duratracs you folks are discussing is equal not what they had either. My humblest appologies, I will chastise my self by ordering the suicide wings with my beer tonight.
