Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

Hi,

I would like to say hi to everyone from Montreal! Happy snow!

I have a 2010 JK sport with a 2 inch boost and 31'' tires. I have been noticing an enormous increase in my fuel consumption since I only drive in the city.

On 2WD dry pavement I will get up to 27L/100Km. Now with the snow and the 4WD I get up to 32L/100km! Is there a problem? I mean I put in $60 ($1.20/L) and I made about 110km before my gas light went on!

What do you guys think?

Thank you!

Alex

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

Greetings,
Welcome alex and happy snow yourself LOL! I'm driving 2000 GC Ltd. 4.7 (about 15l-18l/ 100km-city) and have NO experience or concept of mileage in a JK but 27l/100km in non snowy conditions seems WAY out of line. As sin' mentioned, 15l/ should be closer to your usage at a rough guess I would think.
What is the mfg's suggested consumption (city)? Holy cow 27l ??????
Peter.

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

Hi guys! Thanks for the welcoming!

I just came back from the dealer...It's a 10 min drive from my work. They plugged it in to see for a reading and nothing came out.

We then went for a 20 min drive around town and when we came back the guy that only does test drive told me that I should shift at around 1500 rpm max. I was shifting at 2000-2300rpm.

I tried this on my way back to work and my comsumption went from 22L/100km to 15L/100km... in about 10min...I was driving 45km/h and I was in 4th gear! I felt like granma (sorry granma!). Maybe I was the problem...

Like I said I'm new to jeep and used to drive a car (volvo S-40 T)

I dont know...I will try that for a while and see.

Thanks guys!

Granpa Al

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

Hmm. Agreed, seems a bit rich even for new. I have an 08 JKU, auto, 3:73's bone stock and in 2WD and on the highway it will level out at 9 to 10L/100KM, PROVIDED i keep the skinny pedal in check....100Km/hr and 2000 RPM. Push harder and consumption goes up.

I totally understand adjusting your shift points (RPM) will help, makes sense. That 2000 RPM is the sweet spot on the highway....maybe in town too.

Jeeps are known for their drinking problem, for me I just give up other things to account for it, do the speed limit (easier said then done), remain stock, and don't carry around excessive weight.

End of the day you are rockin the best ride on the road....think topless in the summer!!

Be sure to wave too!

Hey Alex
I'm a Montrealer myself will West Island. And I live close to work so I only do short city driving myself also. And I have seem the reading in my stock 08JKU Rubi go to 26L/100 also. I have not check it since the snow fell and driving around in 4WD. But god is it fun. The best part is driving along some 2 or 3 land roads(Sources, St'Jean) it's almost like there is a lane just for Jeeps, you know the lane with all the snow still covering it, it's the one all the other cars are to scared drive on.
If you wan to see the number fall down to 14-15, hit the resest buttom and take a drive out of the city, head to the Fairview Mall or out to St.Annes and walk the board walk( yes I know it would be a little cold right now)
Take care and don't forget to wave, I crave the wave!

By the way what dealer did you go to?

We have a 09 Wrangler X with 2" lift and 285/70/17 Goodyears. Mostly highway driving and the last tank I got to 400k finally !! I thought I would be finding out how far it will go after the low fuel light came on !

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

even in on the rocks 4 low i get better than that.. well, not much, but I drive the Coquihalla and the Hope-Princeton at 2500 to 5000 rpm for a couple hours every month, and I get no worse than 17-18 l/100km, by the time I've gotten to Ft. Mac I've averaged back to 12 l/100 km.
I'll start a thread next month and post up what I get with 37" tires and 5:13 gears.
(merry Christmas to me )

We get on average 13.5l/100km, and thats with less that 3k on a new mountain edition.

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

First of all, don't go by the dash ECO computer. It averages over the past 500klm unless you constantly reset it. Watch what it reads when you let it idle in the driveway for 20 min. Figure out your consumption the old way with pencil and paper. If you still get crappy mileage try a tank of Premium fuel. I see major gains in fuel economy running Premium.

I live in the Ottawa, Ontario area, and I run a 2010 Mountain Edition with aprrox 9000km on it now. Last time i was at the dealer, he told me to wait to approx. 10000 km for my gas mileage to improve. i mostly drive highway and usually get 11.7L/100KM. For the last week i've just been driving lots of short distances, and it went up to 15.3.

Now that the xmas break is over, i headed out on the highway again this morning like i usually do, and it dropped down to 11 in no time. And i rarely see the 11L/100KM on the dash. so there might be a bit of truth to the breaking in of a new engine. He told me to drive no more then 110km/h

I average 400 - 425 km on approx. 55 liters of gas.

Friends of mine who have the same jeep get approx. 500km on a tank. and they have a bit more mileage.

will keep you posted as the mileage goes up.

Don't forget to wave

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

The tank on my Unlimited is 85L. Currently at 78,000klm, I average 500klm between fill ups (approx 70-75 liters) running premium fuel, 35" tires and factory 3:73 gears. I never got close to that with reg 87 octane gas. I travel about 110 kilometers per day 100 of which is on the hwy at 80-90klm an hour.
As far as the gizmo on the dash, I've seen that go down to 6L/100klm while coasting downhill with 35s. I just depends when you last reset it and how you are driving at the time.

i've got 10 000 on my Mountain Edition with 3.73 Auto and i average 12.5l/100 km.

i haven't yet seen the 9 or even 10 on the gage yet, but it is winter, so i'm hoping to see it when it gets a bit warmer.

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

We have a 2008 Unlimited Rubicon. I noticed when I went to a larger tire, my fuel mileage suffered. I have used both the Hypertech programmer and the Flashpaq and my best mileage was 9-11L/100 km loaded with kids and gear. That was running on the BFG 32" MT's. At 150,000 km, I switched to a set of 33" Federal Couragia MT's and also installed Mopar Off-Road Bumpers. I am now getting 13-15L/100 kms and just passed the 180,000 mark.

I'm also using an AEM Brute Force Stage 2 Cold Air Intake and Jet Throttle Body Spacer.

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

i have a 2012 so new engine but milage is somewhat close. with 1000km I got 15.2L/100km and at 2700km I average out 14.5L/100km. This is all city driving no ringroad or highway! and all stock. I dont expect much change in winter, it will change when the fields and thick snow are in reach tho.

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

2012 unlimited just went to Washington for a couple days and ran 12.5 liters per 100km.
Came home with 5000km on her..... Drove great.

Airdale 08-05-2012 01:47 PM

Re: Is this for real? Gas sucker!!

The mileage will get better with more Kms. I was told by dealer after 15,000 but I just turned 11,500 on my 2011 Sport 2 dr.and noticed an improvement. Scared me when I first got it! Thought 'what have I done!'
I do know that if you shift around 1500 rpm it will help the gas mileage and get on cruise as much as you can, you will up your mileage. Big tires will hurt mileage, but they also said a small lift will help a bit.

Hey ffrenchjk, not sure if you where talking about my fuel numbers but I do have 31's Micky t's and a two and a half lift on my unlimited.... I am new to this vehicle but I thought I was doing pretty good? Heard a lot of horror story's about gas mileage and my doesn't seem to bad for running 110,120km down the highway? 1000km to Washington, cost me just under a $100.... Should I be getting more? Seems good for such a shoebox.......hehehe.

it appears that you are getting much better gas milage than me, but then again i do have 35's. for me to go 1000km i would have to fill up twice. thats about $86.00 a tank.
