pulling a trailler

Pulled a dual axel small dump trailler today lightly loaded and could feel the trailler and load.
Found it sluggish on long hills had to shift down to 2nd a few times but over all it was fine ,nice and compact compared to my truck .
Running about 1100 to 1200 rpm is ok ? or should one shift to a lower gear.
There was a difference when the trailler was empty. The jeep definitely drives different with a trailler ,the rpm vs shifting is different.I thought i knew all about shifting but pulling a trailler is a different experience. If anyone has experience with rpm/gearing post some thoughts

First of all in Ontario its illegal to tow a dual axle dump trailer with your jeep because of the tow rating and trailer weight so I'd be careful with that. Second, no, 1100-1200 rpm is not the correct gear. You have a JK therefore are running the V6 which should be kept around the 2000-3000rpm range to keep the power band.

Good luck with the towing but I certainly wouldn't do it again.

Re: pulling a trailler

I dont mind if you're towing something above your tow rating. My Ranger tows my camper which is 4000 lbs when loaded and my rangers tow rating is only 2500 lbs. I have upgraded my ranger but it still has difficulty going up hills at highway speeds. Just wanted to make sure you take a look at your vehicle tow rating and keep an eye on the trailer weight if need be.

Higher RPM should definitely help with a V6. Enjoy.

thanks, its not like i tow it often but i prefer it to the van .
I am surprised at the towing as you do not feel a trailler tow until you drive a standard ,then you feel it.Its a new experience.
This jeep is my motorcycle/atv and now coming winter my snowmobile --- i just love it

Good looking JK. I love the short wheel base ones. I can't stand the 4 doors. From the picture you gave I think the trailer might be a bit big for the jeep, especially with the jeeps short wheel base.
