Price Estimate - Am I getting ripped off?

Hey all,

I have a Silver 2010 JK 2DR Sport X (Soft Top). Base model, no bells, no whistles, no AC. 6-Spd Manual. 16" steel rims, w/ side steps. I added BFG TA/KO tires, and it has 24000KM. All dealer maintained, including recently a brake lube package, and the 20K peace of mind package. Car is in perfect condition. Off road once. I got in a small accident last year when another car rear-ended us, but I took zero damage. I had it checked by dealership, and they said nothing was wrong... not even a scratch.

Wondering what you all feel is an average price/trade in value here.

I'm looking to upgrade to a 2012 4DR, probably a Sahara Unltd. I drove one today and all I can say is WOW Horsepower....

One dealer (where I bought my 2010) wouldn't give me a quote for trade in unless I made an offer on a 2012... I told him where to go. (Performance Chrysler in St. Catharines). :stroke: He called today and verbally said $13k-14k but they're probably including the tax break in that.

The next dealer seemed awesome, but quoted me $11k trade in (noted as $10k + $1k upgrade bonus), swearing he'd list it at $13.7K on his lot, but would probably have to sell at $12.9K (Rose City in Welland). In all honesty, I liked this guy, he provided a few options to get the best bang for my buck, but the trade in offer is turning me off.

In researching on auto trader, I'm seeing base models like mine for anywhere from $16k - $18k, so I figure there's no way in hell this dealer would list at $13.7k, and is probably thinking $16-17k with a huge profit margin.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance!

your never gonna get what u think you should or want from the dealer and yes they fed u a load of crap saying they will sell it for $12.9 or $13.7. i looked it up on the canadian black book site and the low price for your tradin is about $15.8k and high price is $18k.

cdnbacon,

Thanks very much for the info... I redid your look-up and took out the hard top, and got $14.5k - 16.8k... much more in line with what I was thinking in the $16k-17k range.

Was recommended to try another dealership, and low and behold they use that website on their own to give quotes online for trade-ins.

Excellent ammunition for when the start calling to harass me to buy.

Much appreciated!!

Of course if you're in hurry to drive your 2012 toy it's gonna be easier to trade in with the dealership. Though you might lost some money compared to selling to a particular. Of course you never know how long it will be sold and by the time you wait for someone interested in your Jeep if you still drive it you put more km on it, time goes by and the value drops :(

Anyway good luck in getting the buck for the trade and don't discourage yourself!

Ninemat,

I hear ya... now that I've walked away, I'm going over his inconsistencies; first he'd have to sit on my car because it won't sell, but then they can't keep them on the lot because they're so popular! Which is it?

I know the former is to get me to accept a lower trade in, and the latter is to make me fear the Jeep I drove will be gone if I don't jump on it.

I really hate dealing with sleaze ball dealers... I know there are good ones out there, but man... It's frustrating.

I guess what I'm saying is I'd rather prove my point and NOT get my 2012 than take their crap.

Cheers!

To be honest with you, I don't like car dealers. When I bought mine, in march, I went there 3 times. 1st, to lurk around, looking at the Rubi and the Arctic. 2nd test drive the Arctic which was the same price as the Rubi with a unique color and a couple esthetic goodies you can't find on regular models. 3rd, I made the purchase. All 3 visits in 2 and a half weeks. Of course each time the guy there was very cool and not too harassing. Now that I bought the Jeep, it's like the people over there do not recognize me and they don't give a ----!!!! I don't go anymore. Not even for servicing.

Oh well, I guess that's what it is to be paid on commission when you don't like your job....

Exact same thing with my 2010... even the financing was a nightmare, as I had to fight to get 2.5% as offered... only to learn later they get a kick back on higher rates. Again, I said to them, 2.5% or I walk... and after much humming and hawing I got it.

I'm going to pay a visit to this 3rd dealer who uses that black book site linked above just to see what they offer for a trade in.

Then with all 3 offers, I shall see who's willing to compete for my business :) Might throw a few "tactics" of my own in.

Two can play this game, and my father taught me pretty well how to get what I want in a deal.

I'm very happy I got the confirmation I was looking for that the $11k was just too damn low.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Have you tried a different dealer? I had to trade in my 2010 which was pretty much inline with what you have (mountain edition) but had A/C and Auto with 24k km. I got it at a trade in at around ~$20k for it. Don't know if that was a good deal or not, but I had to do what I had to do at the time. I did the trade in August 2011 (only had the 2010 for a year).

My dealer said that they were going to have a hard time selling mine, which I didn't buy into, and they sold it a week later.

Is there a reason why you're trading in the 2 door?

I hate when you get lowballed. But I also hate trying to sell private pain the ass. One thing to also consider then when you do trade. Is what ever they give you comes off what you buy so you also pay less tax. When I traded my escape in I wasn't happy with what they were giving me but when I thought about that along with the less take it wasn't so bad. And again I didn't want to sell private, get a safey, etest and crap and its just annoying. I agree though that is a low trade value. Shop around a little more. Tell the dealers what you want and leave your number and be patient.

Re: Price Estimate - Am I getting ripped off?

Whenever i buy a new vehicle i pick the closest 5-6 dealers. Go online and check black book price so u have some idea, then go price out the vehicle u want online and print it out with all the options. Take that printout and go to the dealers and tell them i am buying this vehicle this week and am going to 5-6 dealers and getting quotes.....low quote wins. I want the difference price.......don't care about how many years or monthly payments, just difference. Don't want vehicle on the lot unless it is this "exact vehicle" option for option, even if this isn't true. This is important because u want them all pricing the exact same vehicle. Tell them you want a printed quote and are going to show it to the other dealers. Get the first quote and take it to dealer 2 and ask him if he can beat it, yes or no, no haggling. Then repeat untill u go to all them, making them all beat the lowest quote. Then go home and wait a week and the phone will ring, with the salesmen calling u to see if they got the deal or offering u a better deal. Then take the 2 lowest and go back and see them both again and tell them that they are the last 2 and u are giving them 1 more shot before u buy......today. It is surprising how competitive some dealers are with each other, and even salesmen. Also takes them out of there game and they play yours. I have had good luck doing this and it is neat seeing the difference in prices. Even if u don't want an ordered vehicle, this will give u an idea of where u can deal. Say u have changed your mind and now i want the black one on the lot......the difference between sticker prices is all u have ro change to tell u where u should start. Then offer him less, because sometimes they want to move stuff on the lot and will give u more off then an order.....sometimes. Just the way i have fun when dealing, for what its worth.
