Had my first oil change 3 weeks ago on my 2010 Mountain JK (at a dealership....it was free). 3 days ago my dash console started telling me to change the oil. I checked the levels and it is clean and full. Thef filter is in place..all looks good. The weather here has turned a little colder...wondering if that would affect the sensor.

In a related episode, I once bumped a curb (barely) and next thing I know my dash console is telling me to check tire pressure...I monitored it very closely for a couple days...and eventually the sensor seemed to right itself. Tire pressure remained steady throughout.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The oil change reminder message is based on number of cold starts, KM since last reset (in this case since new from Toledo) Nothing to do on weather or dare I say loss of oil. IF you changed the oil BEFORE this message showed up on the dash, the dealer should have reset the computer to "0" so it starts to monitor your # of cold starts ect...IF the message is still on the dash, check the manual it explains how to reset this. I think it's a combination of pressing the gas pedal three times, then turn the key to accessory...check the manual.

On the topic of oil, be sure to check the level other gas fill up or so. There's been reports on older JKs burning (yes) oil, and guys have noted low levels of oil. A good disipline to check, no mater what you drive.


The tire pressure guage can be fussy, THIS is were the temp change will/can drive you nuts, if you are a bit low in one of the tires, temp goes down, the TPMS will alarm you. Regardless if you are running air or Nitrogen in the tires. Just have them topped up, you'll be good. Dont forget the 5th tire

I suspect the dealer forgot to reset the OLM (Oil life monitor) after they did the oil
change.

Here's how:

1. Turn the ignition switch to the ON position (Do not
start the engine).


2. Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three
times within 10 seconds.


3. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.


NOTE: If the indicator message illuminates when you
start the vehicle, the oil change indicator system did not
reset. If necessary repeat this procedure.

As for the TPM (Tire pressure monitor), it was probably a little "Punch Drunk" and then came back to its' senses.

Very quick fix! Turned key to "On"...pumped gas to the floor three times...all good.

Well thanks to Jeepminded for clearing that up! I've actually been changing the oil and re-setting the message as per. I wondered how it was even possible for an engine to tell me that its oil needs changing based on "duty cycle". The mechanic at the dealer said "Oh no, just change it at each mileage interval." For me that's twice per year, not four or five times per year, as the computer says. There's another thing I'd like to permanently disable! Lol.

Glad I could help. Sounds like you don't do too many KMs per year. Regardless of what the messge on the dash board, the age old rule every 5,000Kms or every 3 months, change the oil and filter. It may seem odd if you don't do too many KM's, BUT, low milage usually means short trips, stop and go, that can be worse on a motor then all highway.

And I can't stress enough, be sure to check the oil level on a regular basis !!

The simplest way is to reset is, turn the key on wait and in 10sec or so the oil change message will flash. While it is flashing press the gas pedal 3 times, on the third press the message will stop, simple, now start your Jeep and go :)
Don't be hard on the dealership tech's, we have a number of things to check and sometimes we just forget to reset. There are guys that do oil changes all day they don't forget but at some dealerships an oil change can be handed to a true higher class tech who doesn't do oil changes all that often and even thought he can take and engine apart in a hr or find a small intermittent creek in the suspension. He doesn't always remember to hit the pedal 3 times after an oil change.
