Lube - for door hinges
 

I was wondering what everyone uses or if you use anything to lube your hinges. I remember back in the day jeeps were very bad for rusting at the hinge area. I want to avoide that. Plus since its an exposed area to dirt and what ever else is out ther I want to make sure it stays operateing smoothly. Is there a good product out there that doesn't attract dirt or dirt and dust won't stick too. I know back in the day on my bike I used a cilicone based lube that prevented dirt and crud from sticking.

Any kind of grease should work, but most folks will advise to find some form of white lithium grease. The big difference between this and bike chain lube, is that bike chain lube is much thinner and designed to remove dirt and protect the chain as much as to provide lubrication. Grease will attract a little more dirt yes, but it wil also keep those hinges properly lubed through -30C, ice, salt, +30C and whatever mud, snow etc you throw at them. Applying a thinner form of lubricant may actually help remove the existing grease...

I use Vaseline (seriously). Works well and doesn't make a mess like lith grease.

I remove my doors often,and I use anti-seize on my hinges,works like a charm and it really sticks so I don't have to put some on too often,usually once in the spring and I'm good for a long while.
I really detest using grease cuz it cause dirt and grit to stick there.

been using wd 40 when needed , stay away from the grease cuz of the dirt attraction myself .

I'd stay away from using WD-40 for things like this. It works really well to keep the surfaces clean and as a water deterrent, but it is not viscous enough to provide any real lubricating qualities to a heavy mechanism like a door hinge. It will actually help removed any grease that has been applied to the hinge. Just my 2 cents.


... but you're right, it will keep things a lot cleaner...

look for a lubricant called "Fluid Film" . It is a wax based lubricant and is the only type of lube I use on doors/hinges/latches/ and even undercoating. Its a little more expensive, but very worth it. I believe it goes for about 12-13 bucks a can, but last a while. HTHs

I just had the hinges changed by the dealer (blistering paint on the door hinges) and whatever lub they used when the dealer put it back together is awesome slippery and doesn't run, so far. I will get the product name and post back..

Probably fluid film. ;). I work at 3 seperate dealerships wrenching and all used fluid film cause its the best with no dripping or mess andpenetrates better than lithium by far. Good stuff

+1 for fluid film, I use it a lot at work for different things. very nice product, keeps things lubed nicely without a bunch of run-off

Do you mind me asking how the hinge painting went? I'm in the same boat, my dealer is on board with helping me out. Did they just pait the hinges? Doors and hinges? How's the color match? You happy with the out come?

I will need to address my sooner rathe then later. The fronts are worse then the back doors. (08 JKU)

All 8 hinges were getting pretty bad. I wanted to wait till they were bad enough that they couldn't dispute the claim on all the hinges.
I put the claim in, they called me a week later, said the hinges were in the paint booth drying and when could I bring the Jeep in. Brought it in 2 days later and only took them a couple hours.
The problem was not the paint but with the hinge prep and material. The fix is replacement of the hinges.
Paint match is perfect for the black and they did a real nice job. Can't even tell they were changed.

Sounds like they painted a fresh set of hinges, then removed your originals, and insatlled new. Wow, and no markes from removal and install eh? My dealer says they MAY need to pait the entire door(s)...that had me worried on match. My Jeep is Rescue Green.

Yes, new hinges were painted and installed .. They must replace the hinges as the metal they are made of and the prep is what causes the problem. Painting the old hinges will not solve the problem, it will reoccur. If you look closely you can see that the hinges are painted separate from the doors during manufacture. There is no break in the paint where the hinges came off. Hence, the blistering only happens on the hinges themselves.

Is Fluid Film white like liquid paper.. Thats what they put on my hinge pins.
BTW Found Fluid Film at Canadian Tire $14.99 a can. Didn"t want to spring for it in case thats not what the dealer used.
