just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

Hey guys, I bought my jeep about a month and a half ago and the dealer finally sent me the soft top they forgot to put in the jeep. The side windows say Bestop on them.
The tops I've look at on the bestop website don't really look like this one. Mine has the two latches on the front of it(like the freedom top has) whereas the tops on the website have the knobs that screw in on the front...is it possible they sent me the wtong one or do you think this is a different style not listed on the bestop website?

Re: just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

Bestop is a Original Equipment Manufacture for Jeep. What you see on their web site may not be OEM for the JK.The two cardboard boxs that came with my side and rear windows had Bestop on them. The header on my top has two latchs to secure the top to the top of the winsheild, I don't see any other way of doing it.

Think you are ok....

Congrats on the new Jeep, and remember to wave!

It sounds like the OE equipment.Have you tried installing it yet?
Try it out and see how it fits.I think it'll be fine.
Congrats on the new Jeep.

Re: just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

it seems to look like the replace a top...anyways, i put it on...the front two corners dont seem to want to stay down(maybe its bent, im going to play with it) and on the two end of the tailgate retainer, right above the tail gate, there are two spaces which you can see right inside the jeep?
AHHH

Re: just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

The front bow (the bar that runs widthwise) just behind the driver/front passanger seat has a plastic clip that needs to 'seat' into the bar that runs lenghwise of the Jeep.

It also helps if you can allow your top to sit in the sun and strach out a bit.

I don't have the spaces at the back, there is a LH and RH clip..and a front/back (think there's arrows to show this)

Keep at it, you will get there, it took me a bit to get use to, now I can have the top up in 5min or less....like ridding a bike.

Maybe surf the net for a step by step photo??

Re: just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

Are soft tops suppose to seal all round? I just adjusted it and I can still hear air coming in the front two corners over the windshield

Jeepminded 07-17-2010 06:10 PM

Re: just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

Yes, it should seal all the way around, first time I installed it I was actually impressed with the engineering put into this top!! When driving you should not hear any wind noise, whistle if you get my drift (no pun intended) Just remember its a single layer of canvas, so it's louder in the cab then with the hard top.

When putting your top on, as per the manual I work from front to back, then secure the two clamps under the sun visors last. These should be stiff when you press them in.

If you still have questions, post some pictures, they are worth a 1,000000 words, I may be able to help better

1. first image is of the passenger side...it looks as if maybe its bent or something? i dont know, like I said before, Im knew to jeep and do not know much about this...

2. second image is of the front(obviously lol) notice how the passenger side look as if its sitting a bit higher over the windshield?

3. third image is of the drivers side(same as image one) looks like it bent up a bit...

4. forth image is where I can see some daylight out he siide, almost where it is bentt up...I dont hear too much wind coming in there, I hear the wind more from the front corners..

5. fifth image is the passenger side...right up in the corner(between the latch and where the plastic ends, before the roll bars protector(zipper) starts) is where I hear wind coming in...

6. sixth image is the drivers side...same thing as passenger side...

7. seventh image is from undernear where is looks like its bent up on drivers side(refer to # 3)

Re: just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

Well, you are one a head of me, I have yet to post any pixs, they worked, I can now see what you mean.

Your first photo reminded me of the first time I put my softtop on, and I hope its the same easy fix for you. The gap from the softtop header and the seal on the window frame look normal....for a softtop that is not properly locked down with the two clamps under the sun visor.

(Its hard to tell if they are locked in place or not in the photos,,,,sorry if they are and I can't tell)

These are hinged, and you have to put your two thumbs and seperate them, then insert the J hook part on the frame of the windshild, then push the handle in to lock it in. Doing it right will need a bit of pressure to make it lock in.

I have a picture I've tried to insert, 1st timer, not going so well, will try again when Im not tired.

Check this link out, note step six...since I can't post pictures ??

http://project-jk.com/jeep-jk-write-...door-unlimited

Your second photo seems ok too, the frame of the top I don't think will ever be perfectly square, never really noticed myself.

The other thing you need to check is since this is a sunrunner, when you put the top up, did the frame of the top slide in the plastic rails, and the round pin on each side lock into the pivoit point. I just thinking if you do have the latchs in place under the sun visors, then maybe the entire top is not sitting forward enough.

Same link check out step #11

I hope his is helping, and not frustrating check the clamps under the visor....the 1.5 to 2" gap your first photo shows is very typical until you lock them down, they are a two piece clamp on a hinge.

Good luck and keep trying you will get though this part.

Too bad you are in SSM, we could have had this nailed in the parking lot of Tim Hortons :)

Re: just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

Thanks again Jeepminded...i uploaded my photos through photo bucket, they give you step by step on uploading then once you've uploaded them on there, you can click share, then you just want to click where it says share on forum, then copy that link and paste it in here...

as far as the clamps go, yes they were and are clamped down...which is why i do not understand why i am not getting a damn seal! this is very frusterating lol...i guess all i can do is to keep playin around with it until something works, ugh

Re: just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

referring to # 8 on that link, mine does not have a clip like that?

Jeepminded 07-18-2010 10:22 AM

Re: just got my soft top from dealer - hmm

Thanks for the photo advice, I will give this a try.
Ahaa, the link I sent you is for a JK Unlimited (aka 4door), which is the same as what I have, and I see you have the 2 door....so makes sense a smaller top does not need this extra bow and clip.

Hmm. Never touched a 2 door toop, they should be darn close.!

Now that you have confirmed the visor clips were locked down, then for sure the top is not sitting forward enough....I would focus there.
Maybe try a web search for a 2-door top write up, or maybe one the other 2-door guys could chim in here.

It would be ideal if you new of another 2-door in your area to compare to....check out the car lots in your city.

I check in later, good luck.

Oh crap!! Sorry to hear you took on water.
Have you given this a try ?
http://www.bestop.com/installation_guides/54716.pdf
Bestop should have a 1-800 for support

This site has quite a bit of info if you can find what you are looking for
http://www.jk-forum.com/forum.php

If not, maybe try posting a question there, I sure there's a 2 door Jker that could advise.

I hate to say it, but it may be time to swing by the dealer for help...hit them up for a free interior cleanning for your troubles.

Best of luck, let us know how you make out

Check youtube for videos, search for jeep jk soft top, there is a bunch. The front, ontop of the windshield isn't ahead enough. It has to sit overtop the rubberseal, if the back is hooked and your top is new and stiff u might not be able to pull it forward. Try with the back corners unhooked and sit inside and try to lift the front up and forward. I put mine on May 2 and it was a year old and still really tight first time on in cool weather. Someone earlier said let it sit in the sun, good advice!! Also looks like the drip clip things over the doors are not in right, my 2009 has a little button thing at back top off the door that it clips into, then pull the top in over the door window the same way the side window bottoms go in, little black tabby, thing-a-ma-jigs. Like tracklock said look to see if u got the black holders that clip on the top of each side of the tailgate. First few times u think u should have a damn engineering degree to put top up, then it get's easier with time untill its not a problem anymore lolololol!!

Hey just so you know,, I just put my soft top on about 2 months ago now and needed some help from the service mngr at the dealership. I have had 2 door jeeps and the tops are close but not the same . I was missing (from the time I bought myJK) the extra pieces that hold the dang thing down . The dealer forgot to put the boxs in and the windows LOL. But it is on and only leaks when I go to the car wash . Yes wind noise , it is a soft top so .. But now it will be on till the white stuff starts falling. Good luck with that , keep us posted .

WOW! A DVD!? That's top shelf!!! Could have used one of those my first time...3 years ago. I made the same party foul, and had to go to the dealer to figure out how in the heck to tuck the side windows into the plastic window frame. (4 door)

Keep smiling Olliebamino, you get it...and when you do it's worth it.

Its doesn't stop there, you will want to kick it up another noch and remove the doors!! :3gears:
