Jeep towing about to buy

I have a deal on the table right now but the jeep does not have a tow group. I only plan on towing a bit over 1000 pounds. Can I just add a hitch. Do wranglers have oil coolers..help

Hello Royinregina,
I don't know much about Jeep's - planning on buying my first one. I think though that people could help you here if they knew the year of your Jeep and the axle ratio. I think towing depends on a number of factors.

Hi, btw , if you type 'towing capacity jeep wrangler' in your browser window, you can find a lot of info from different sites concerning towing capacity. Cheers :-)

Depends on alot of things, even tire size. Start by looking on the side of your drivers door, by where it latches. Should tell u all the axle and gross weights u are allowed. Think it is weight of vehicle plus trailer wieght = gross weight. Someone will jump in and tell me if i am wrong. The sticker on the door is what the mto goes by anyway so u should start there. Then figure out what it means lol. Would bet some of the diesel or trailer forums for trucks explain how to relate sticker info to trailer weight. I have pull a double snowmobile trailer with 2 sleds. Must have been over 1000 pounds and had to be very careful braking, trailer had alot of push!!

I am thinking that yes your jeep can tow 1000 lbs but I wouldn't go much more than that without the trailer tow package. I have the tow package on my unlimited rubicon and it is rated for 3500 lbs, I think the tow package only comes with hitch, anti sway and wiring harness. Because the package doesn't come with any extra engine or transmission cooling I think you would be fine towing 1000 lbs, just be careful with the swaying on you're short wheel based jk.
P.S I also pull an enclosed snowmobile trailer and the only problem I have is seeing behind the thing.

Yo! royinregina

See this link on page 329 to 358 it will explain most of Ur questions.

http://www.scribd.com/doc/16358467/J...-Owners-Manual

As for the hitch go to 4wd and buy http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.as...0&partID=44835 and the wires http://www.4wd.com/productdetails.aspx?partID=15831

U dont need an oil cooler if u keep around 1000lbs.

Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR).The GAWR is the maximum permissible load on the front and rear axles. The load must be distributed in the cargo area so that the GAWR of each axle is not exceeded.
Each axle GAWR is determined by the components in the system with the lowest load carrying capacity (axle, springs, tires, or wheels). Heavier axles or suspension components sometimes specified by purchasers for increased durability does not necessarily increase the vehicle’s GVWR.

One of the guy's on here towed his sons mercedes on a dolly with his tj, lifted, 33's with no problem so a small utility trailer should be no problem at all.
