home made jerry can mount

so my wife and i are doing our first real trip with or jeep at the end of the month ( talked her in to it:wink:) but were going quite a ways out of town and i want to be able to carry my two jerry cans without putting them in the vehicle as were going to be camping for three days and i dont want everything to stink like gas and i cant afford to buy a mount im thinking my two options are to incorporate a carrier into my spare carrier but im wondering if its strong enough to hold the extra 80 ish pounds or i build a mount onto a hitch bar that will hold them but the thing about that is i wont be able to get in my gate with that on and i dont think i can talk the boss into letting me drill holes in her gate yet to mount a carrier thanks for any thoughts or input guys

what jeep (wheels) and what size cans?

if you can fashion it saddlebag like over the spare tire mount, where the two cans sit on the lip of the back bumper on either side to take the brunt of the weight, you should be okay, or if from gas station directly to off-road, strapped in the front, sitting on that bumper. But which jeep you got and wheel tires and what size cans?

If you have a jku, you of course remove the spare put that inside,. and make a mount for the cans outside. For a receiver rack, copy something like below. It sits lower than the tailgate, you either remove the cans to open the gate or depending in the thickness of the cans, lay them on their side and see if it clears when opening the gate. If your fabricating rack you can make it low enough your self to achieve the clearance. But all of that kills your departure angle if you expecting any slight off-roading etc.
