Help!!!!! Malfunction Indicator Light!!!!!!!

Hi All,

Recently got a 2007 Wrangler X and love it!!!!! There was a light on (malfunction indicator light-looks like a little engine) and they changed the O2 sensor, it went off and we went on our merry way.

3 weeks later we are driving, hubby plugs in an Ipod to the stereo via an AUX. cable and the second he did that the malfunction indicator light came on.

Any ideas what the heck is going on?

Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge.

PS-I did the on/off/on/off/on thing to get the codes and there were none that came up just ------- then "done"

Ok just to be sure.....
1: Turn the ignition key until the digital odometer displays, then turn it back to off. Repeat three times in succession. (ON/OFF/ON/OFF/ON)
2:Count the number of times the check engine light on the dash flashes on and off. The number of flashes represents the trouble code. There is a slight pause between the flashes representing the first and second digits of the code. Longer pauses separate different trouble codes.
3:For example, light flashes 5 times, then a short pause, then flashes 5 more times. This is code 55.
4:Diagnostic trouble codes will also be shown in the odometer display.
5:Code 55 is the last diagnostic trouble code displayed.

It must give you 55 at the end of the display. If it does, then there is no code and maybe there is a wiring problem.
Retry and let me know. :)

Hi There,

I did the on/off/on/off/on thing again and the check engine light didn't even flash once. Still no error codes either. At first all the symbols are on and one by one go off, there was one that lingered the longest but finally went off (z) kinda looked like that. But it went off eventually and the only one that stays on is the check engine light.

Any ideas?

Thanks

well no codes usually means no problem but I realise the light on is unnerving,so-
Check your wheel sensor wires, sometimes they are the problem. They are located on the inside of each of your wheels. Just follow the wire.If all is well then...
Disconnect negative terminal from the battery, wait 10 to 15 mins, and reconnect.Your light should now be off and it should stay off.
Also, sometimes when you do the code thing,if you go too fast it won't work. But you said it says done.So I guess you are doing it properly.Anyhoot, try what I suggested and let me know.

I'm not sure you will be able to get codes out of this model by using the ignition. I may be wrong; but I think this light is onle for emmision related componets; so that should rule out wheel sensors. Have the vehicle scanned; you still may have a o2 code. There is most likley 2 sensors. Some newer vehicles have 4 sensors; and indentifying which one to replace can sometimes be difficult.

They just put a new O2 sensor in 3 weeks ago.

Guess I gotta take it in to see what's going on.

Luckily it's still within the 30 day warrenty time since I bought it.

We'll see what happens.....

I am almost positive you will have 2 sensors. 1 upstream, by exhaust manifold and a down stream sensor by converter. You may need the other sensor replaced. There is alot of other possibilties as well, that a scan will verify.

Re: Help!!!!! Malfunction Indicator Light!!!!!!!

You're right guys, there are 4 o2 sensors, they will be designated 1/1, 1/2 etc. for bank 1, sensor 1 or bank 1, sensor 2. The trouble code will show which sensor is operating outside of its desired parameters and whether it is pegged lean, rich, shorted or the heater circuit is malfunctioning. Before condemning the o2 sensor, make sure your gas cap is tight and sealing properly.
Good Luck

So here's an update....

I have an appointment for Friday morning at the dealership (only because I just bought the Jeep less than 30 days ago) and the MIL has been on for 4 days.

Guess what! It's gone off all by itself now....what the heck?!?!?!?!

Glad it's off though...fingers crossed it stays that way!

It will have stored the fault code that caused the MIL to illuminate. Let us know what it is. If you ever need a good technician you could try the Mufflerman in Paris, and ask for Justin. I went to school with him and he was very good even as an apprrentice. Good Luck!
