Grille mod I've been meaning to do

4 Attachment(s)
Finally got around to doing the plastidip mod to my front grille.

I love the flat black contrast with the black paint.

Such an easy mod, just use some isopropyl alcohol to clean the grille, especially if you have waxed several times such as I have this way the plastidip will stick much better with the wax removed. I shot 4 coats of plastidip one every half hour then waited a few hours and put the grille back on.

A few pics below.

Easy mod and if you don't like it or make an error you can simply peal it off.

Thanks for looking.

I was going to buy the mopar grille that is the same plastic and texture of the fender flares, but this looks pretty good. My only concern is that i heard plastidip can peel. So I was going to price out getting my grille sprayed with bedliner or something maybe would be cheaper (Mopar grille is 500 clams)

Looks good. I am planning on spraying my rims, but sitting on the fence whether to use bedliner or Plastidip. Come to think of it, I can prob try Plastidip first and if I don't like it, I can bedline it.

Autojunkieman: I think you can buy an extra grill plus two cans of bedliner and it will still be cheaper than the Mopar one. There was seller on Kijiji selling two grills for $80. You can spray one and keep your stock grill in the event you want to switch back. I was going to pick them up as a head boards for my kids beds, but the wifey said no.

Dad of the year right there as far as I am concerned!

I was never able to find the price of stock grilles, the one I have on my jeep right now is pretty beat up. So I would probably use it if I was going to do anything. I just have no clue what kind of prices I am looking at to bedline it, it's definitely not an area I am familiar with.

I know guys on the Wrangler forum that have had their grilles plastidiped for 5 years without issue. It will only peal when you choose to peal it off. Some people are doing their entire vehicles and body shops are doing it.

I only paid 20 bucks for one can and that's all that's needed to do 4 coats.

I've had the chrome bumper of my 09 VW Jetta plasti dipped for a few years now, its seen about 60,000km, across canada, and down south once, and is on the original paint job... handling rocks and bugs very well... i imagine the chrome underneath is going to shine like the day i covered the ugly crap up

i sprayed mine on the vehicle, mask a few inches away from what i want and spray a little extra on, and peels nice and clean...

i ordered mine from dipit.ca, i ordered enough i got my cans down to about $6 a can...

The more I look at this the more I want to do it...

But I have concerns, one major one is I would like to see it on person. I've never actually seen it in person before, in photos the surface looks uneven but maybe that's just me. :-S

I would like a black grille for my rig would look great against the white paint and black fenders and bumpers, I've no idea if it would match etc etc. Quite a big investment for alot of ifs.

Edit: this video I found kind of concerns me. If this guy can rub it off with his finger kind of concerns me, he said he put 4 coats on it (sarcastically saying he did it wrong)

Ok so further research has found other people having really tough stuff, so I guess he did it wrong? Or is using a really cheap brand of it. I throught it was weird he couldn't peel it off, maybe he is trying to ruin the plasti dip rep.. CONSPIRACY!

lol...that there is what I am afraid of....but the only way to find out is to actually do it...and whatever the outcome is, it becomes a "live and learn" experience.

BUT...i think he didn't put enough layers on.

I think simply the spray can doesn't put on an even enough layer onto it, it has such a small pattern there is no even coating "fan" effect to get it sprayed on nicely. I was also looking at the idea of Line-X there is a store near me but they want me to call them to get a price quote, instead of giving me one over email. Seems judgy when people aren't willing to give prices electronically I feel like there going to give me a price based on who I am.

Re: Grille mod I've been meaning to do

I plastidipped my grille this past weekend as well. I put 5 coats on it, waited 30 mins in between coats, then waited 4 hrs after last coat before I reinstalled the grille. I think it looks great, against the silver paint. I also plan on dipping my wheels and if I can't find a set of used plain black fender flares, I'm going to dip them too.

I recommend giving the dip a try, you won't lose much $ if you don't like it. Peel the dip off and your done.
Bed liner is permanent, dipping isn't.
