camping trailer for Jeep JK
Hey I'm new to this forum and fairly new to being a Jeep co-owner. We are looking for a Jeep trailer either complete or any base trailer that we can make a tent trailer out of it. We wouldn't mind finding an army jeep trailer (the smaller one) as I could custom make the interior. Any one who could help me find something like this would be appreciated. Don't want to spen $12,000 plus for a new one. Wouldn't mind knowing where I could see one in person at a trade show somewhere or dealership. Are there any around Ontario??

We bought one like this ( that's not us ) called a Sprite 400. We wouldn't even know its behind the TJ until you look in the rear view mirror. Its weather tight and cost $1500.00. If you do a search you will find an article describing how one of these trailer completed a Baja race towed behind a smaller car. They are tough. I think mine was built in the mid 70's. You can still find them in the classifieds once in a while.

Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
I'm interested in this idea as well so I'll wait patiently on the side lines to see what develops. Been looking at tent trailers but would love something different to take offroad with a tent setup. Problem for me is trailers are hard to come by in these parts...

Thanks for the info Paul - I will check it out and see if I can find anything in this area that compares.

Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
Here is a link to that article. I thought the Sprite was towed behind a small car, but was in fact pulled by an early Bronco. Even better as it is closer to the Jeep in size relationship. Your 2012 would pull one of these effortlessly.

Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
Thanks Paul - I'm thinking if we put bigger tires under it might become a little top heavy but it is impressive what the Sprite went through on the Baja.

Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
Hey Mike - Just bought a 2011 "Little Guy" - Rough Rider - 5 wide. It's the size of a queen size mattress (inside and comes with the mattress) in the tear-drop shape. This one is made to go off-road and will go anywhere the Jeep will go. It has a 3/8" steel skid plate completely enclosing the bottom and has big burly tires. (sorry not sure of the size but this one (used) is coming with 2 spares.) This one also has a battery pack which powers the roof vent and uses a wheelchair battery and charges while driving. You can get all kinds of up grades but I like what this one comes with. We get it at the end of March so I'll send a pic then if you're interested. Can't wait to go camping!!!

Kate, please post some pics and how you like it, I'm very interested! They look great.
Id be interested to know how much the trailer cost as well, not much in the way of pricing online. |

Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
This is mine. Fiberglass '73 Trillium 1300, 13' long, dry weight about 1000 lbs, sleeps 4, fridge, stove, all the amenties of home....made in Canada. There are many versions of this trailer some sleep 2 with a bathroom. Boler made some along with UHaul. They are super light and are classics.
They don't give them away though, you are in Ontario and there are many there for sale just have a look in Kijiji. I got mine from a lady who had it in her drive way for the last 20 years, 2 years ago she had it ready for the road but for health reasons never got to use it. I have driven by this thing since I was a kid. Everyday I told my wife I was going to stop in and ask if she wanted to sell, and I finally just walked up and knocked on the door and got it for $2900, ready to use. I decided to do a frame off resto on it last winter and I sandblasted the frame, painted and installed brakes, and obviously painted it to match. You can buy them brand new from Trillium now again. They sell for about $12-14G. But the originals are rare and classic. Myself, wife 2 kids and the dog love it. I get between 13-14 L/100KM pulling it. https://www.jeepscanada.com/attachme...ine=1353535686 |
Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
Does anybody have (or know of a good place to get) one of those tent/camping apparatus things that attach to the back/top of the jeep? They seem to be everywhere in Australia . . . and are very portable/compact and practical.

Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
I have a 10ft skamper pop up camper that im modifying to be more off road freindly. Adding an axle flip. 1.5" shakle lift and bigger tires and wheels. I should get 6 good inches of lift from this. I need to get a different coupling system to take the off camber off roading. I also have 2 Pro comp shocks to add to it as well.

Look at Jayco trailers, I believe it's their feather lights that are lightweight. They are off-road capable though.

You could always check out the little guy trailers,
Little Guy Teardrop Trailers - Home Im going to head to a dealership, perhaps this weekend, to check them out in person. They intrigue me. I dont really need a washroom in my trailer, just need something more comfortable and dry than a tent. Ninja Edit - They also have an off-road version that has a great review for it. http://www.4wdandsportutility.com/te...amper_trailer/ |

Little Guy Lil' Rough Rider Teardrop Camper Trailer - Off Road Tires - 4 Wheel Drive & Sport Utility Magazine But I would like Minimum 1 Queen or King bet even if I have to fold it out or whatever, Propane/electric fridge, propane exterior BBQ mounts and propane stove with decent onboard water storage. Thats my minimums, extras I would like is AC, gas genny and solar pannels with inverters. So i am really looking for a "camping trailer" the little guy trailers seem like a good solo thing, I'd like something semi livable. |

Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
Crazy crazy..
Ok i found some research saying that; "Towing capacity varies based on which axel ratio you choose. You’re limited to 2,000 lbs with the 3.21 ratio while the 3.73 ratio raises that figure to a 3,500-lb maximum trailer capacity." 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Review: Car Reviews It's at the bottom of the article above the picture, so is this true? Can i get a Jeep Employee to confirm this for me? If so that means I can get a really nice trailer, i have the 3.71 Axle Ratio and this would make my day! |
Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
Very impressive! I love the colour. (Looked back after posting - thought I was replying directly on the photo of the yellow jeep with the yellow trailer!)

Yes the setup of Duke is really nice.
I picked-up a 2012 Wrangler Sport 2dr on Friday morning to replace the 2006 Suzuki GV we had. Installed a hitch, wiring and brake controller, and Saturday morning went to bring back our camping trailer from where it was stored for the winter about 40km away. It's a Boler and weights around 1500 lbs. It went nice and hardly noticed it was behind. https://www.jeepscanada.com/attachme...ine=1367245295 |

Re: camping trailer for Jeep JK
For your information, to get it done by a professional, brake controler included, it should be around 550.00$. Then, in Canada, a nice Boler should be around 5000.00$ Mine is a 1973, we have it since 1996, never did anything yet on it except to change the robinetery for 15$, and change the suspension to get 5 more inches of clearance, this went for 800$ because I wanted the frame to be reinforced. -'m giving you the market price because we got the Boler for only 500$ from my wife's dad. ;-)
