Shifted to 2wd while doing 60kmh

Hello all,
I'm new to this site but should have joined way sooner because I own a 93 JGC and
I love it. It has some minor problems (windows need fixing to go up and down) and theres a minor oil leak for the head gasket I think.

Heres the problem,
I'm driving at about 60-70 kmh down the street, I decide to shift to 2wd as there was no need for 4 wd at the time. I noticed and odd sound, then the steering got screwed up and
stayed that way till I dropped my friend off. It wasn't leaking any fluid when I stopped for a while to check things out. I shifted back and forth between 2wd and 4wd a couple times.
The jeep was just running at this time and in park(its automatic).
Finally, about to head home, in 2wd. The steering was back to normal, and I don't know if I did any permanent damage. I'm not going into 4wd unless someone tells me a really good reason to do so because otherwise it's gonna get expensive I'm guessing.

Any help as to whether I damaged my 4wd would help, and also, what is the proper method of shifting to 4wd and vice versa. I believe I have select trac .

Thanks

I believe it's the New Process Gear . thats from the Id Plate.
Do you need the numbers?

Yes since all the Jeep T/C's are either NP or NV made at the same company. What are the numbers?

Ok here we go,
Model 242.1
assembly #5300 9350
serial 4 10 92 1
ratio 272
Hope that helps.

Re: Shifted to 2wd while doing 60kmh

so im guessing you were in the full time 4wd? or where you in Part Time...

Part time is exactly that, locked driveshafts front and back... and you only want that part of the time... like when your stuck, or out in the dirt but going faster than 4 low can go lol...

but yeah, you probably heard the front driveshaft locking up and then disengaging... they say its safe to shift into 4wd on the fly, but not disengage... the 242 can be a temperamental case

Re: Shifted to 2wd while doing 60kmh

At the time it was in full time 4wd. I did not know it wasn't safe to shift into 2wd while going that
speed. I guess the question now is, is it safe to test 4wd again (where Im at a dead stop and going straight slowy 2-3 mph untill it meshes ?) or will it get stuck in the messed up
state it went into last time. It's driving fine now in 2wd.
Thanks.

Re: Shifted to 2wd while doing 60kmh

You should be safe to try it again, im not sure if you did any damage or not... shift in at a crawl... and shift out at a crawl
the down fall of the case is that it locks the driveshafts before going to full time... this for the driving onto nasty terrain and shift on the fly is great, but going from fulltime to fulltime sucks...

and i've experienced with both my ZJ's and my WJ that sometimes the front drive shaft wont dissengage when returning to full time (2wd or 4wd) and i've got to either let it coast downhill (where the wheels are picking up the speed not the engine applying more power) or shifting it into reverse.

Ok, sounds good, Il give it a try as you say crawling real slow.

Let you know how it goes.
Oh, and thanks very much for the help.

Ps. Im glad I joined this forum. Ive had repairs that I likely spent too much on because I
didn't talk to people who know about jeeps.

Re: Shifted to 2wd while doing 60kmh

Hello again,
Ok, just tested, turns out your right. 4wd full time and part time still work however, they
definately are a bit noisier than they were. Steerings a bit odd(hard to describe) .Also going from 4wd to 2wd takes( stopped then reverse for a few feet then stop then drive) to get to normal 2wd feel. Il have to have it looked at one day I suppose.
Coud a gear have stripped or the shaft warped?

Thanks.
