rear rubbing noise

i have a 2000grand cherokee limited 4.7, im getting a rubbing sound from the right rear whenever I make left turns. I had a similar problem 6months ago, but the rubbing sound came from the left rear instead. I had that fixed with a simple change in the rear differential fluid with the friction modifier. This time the sound is coming from the right rear and is slightly different. Could this be a problem with my rear axles? I doubt that the rear differential fluid needs to be changed again. Any thoughts anyone?

Have you had a chance to look around at the external components to look for any witness marks from possible rubbing of rotating components yet? If not, get a good light and take a peek around to see of there is any evidence...

yea i don't see any witness marks, its wierd, the sound doesnt come all the time. I probably hear it once every week. At times when the sound is absent, I also notice a slight shudder from the rear when making left turns.

first thing i would do is check all your tire tread depths and tire pressures and make sure they are the same...you know 4x4's, you have to be so careful...and how long ago did you have the fluid changed??
oil breaks down and so does that friction modifyer...6 months of city driving is a lot...check your tires, then maybe its time for another rear diff service

i had the rear differential fluid changed in may 09, and I've only driven 6k since. I think I read somewhere that it needs to be changed every 2yr/24k. I think you're right with the tires though, all the tire pressures are good but my back right tire has more wear than the others, so i guess this is why im hearing the sound from the right rear when making left turns. It's either that tire or prematurely worn diff oil.

check the wear pattern on your right rear tire...if its different than the others...for example if one side of the tread is worn...check for loose axle bearings...it could even be bad shocks...tire wear can tell you exactly what the problem is some times

im getting the same thing but i noticed that the rear right shock is leaking so im guessing it's done.i'm gonna replace both this weekend and check again, tire pressure is bang on on all four.,

Don't forget to rotate your tires every once in awhile to help keep the tread wear even.
