rear end whirr noise at 90 to 100 kmh

Hi all, I have a 2005 Grand Cherokee Laredo with 167000 km on it. When at speeds between 90 and 100 kmh I am getting a whirr sound comming from the rear of the vehicle almost like a high pitched tire noise but it is not the tires because when I let off the gas pedal it totally dissapears immediately. As soon as I reapply the pedal it comes back. The harder I apply the pedal the louder it gets. It seems to be audable only at the 90 to 100kmh range. I had the rear end grease changed but it made no difference. What might this be? Thanks

James

Any vehicle I've had that started that generally is Wheel bearing noise. If you can get it on a hoist and run the tires safely, you should be able to find it., Check your U-Joints just in case.

Just a suggestion, If it IS a wheel bearing I would do both sides at the same time.

Regards

Hello.
I have a '94 JGC and a new 08 Diesel. This is the 4th JGC and I loved them all. When I bought my '94 I noticed dhorty after I bought it used a noise coming from rear end. After working on it myself replacing bearings, seals, rear end oil, gaskets etc. I finally took it back to "5 Star Service" at dealership...$600.00 later still had noise. Screamed, hollered, etc. etc but no luck. Finally took it to local mechanic and he took it for a test drive and came back and said, "it's the right rear axle". Sure enough he was right. It was out of round, that is a flat spot on the axle where the bearing rode. New axle and problem gone. Good Luck

when you had the diff fluid change, did they put the friction additive into it, made by chrysler...i recently rebuilt the diff in my 97 gc and i put a full bottle of lucas engine oil supplement into the mix with the additive along with 90w diff fluid...

i would try the additive first, if that doesnt work...take the cover off the rear diff, drain the fluid and do a paint test on the ring gear and see what kind of wear is going on between the pinion gear and the ring gear...

Check those pictures out, that's when i rebuilt the diff in mine. The paint checks for backlash.
