OVERHEATING problem

Hey all,

I drive a 1999 Jeep GC limited 4.7L V8. My problem is that the engine overheats when idling and moving slowly, but when i get up to speed (above 50km/h) it cools back down. I just drove about a 500 km trip from guelph to ottawa from school and checked the temperature frequently because i knew about the problem. The temperature stayed at about 100 the entire way but as soon as i was stopped at a traffic light it heated up very quickly. Also, it takes a long time, even when already at operating temperature, for the internal heating to blow hot air. The radiator is less than 2 years old so im guessing something along the lines of heater core blockage, electrical fan issue or thermostat issue. If anyone could lend some advice it would be greatly appeciated.

Thank you,
Jake

Does your's have the mechanical fan as well as the electric? The fan clutch may not be engaging completely to spin it at the proper speed. If you replaced the rad did you replace the thermostat and rad cap at the same time?

Re: OVERHEATING problem

I believe it has both the electrical and mechanical fans. I swapped out the thermostat the other day and still the same problem. I noticed that the upper radiator hose is extremely hot and has alot of pressure within (cannot even be squeezed), while on the other side of the radiator the cap is quite cool. Also, my initial problem of overheating being solved when getting up to speed now does not work, it only cools down when i turn the engine off and let it cool. I think i may have a water pump issue. Does anyone know the approximate cost and time labour time for this job, so that i dont get ripped off?

Can I install a regular fan blade in my 2001 Jeep G/C? the electric doesn't seem to last...
