crazy shudder
Howz it goin?
I have a 2003 Grand Cherokee Overland that has developed a crazy shudder when hitting certin bumps at highway speed. I have already replaced all 4 balljoints and all controll arms and bushings in front as well as track bar. I have also replaced controll arms, bushings and balljoint in rear. the shudder is still there. it only happens on certin bumps like railway crossings at 90Kph. I hit the brakes and it goes away. I am at a loss with this one. any help would be awesome Thanks Rod northern Ontario |
Re: crazy shudder
not too shabby... this one sounds like a fun one...
Its hard to tell without actually feeling it... so im wondering is it a shudder left and right, or a up and down, do you feel it in the steering, or in the body of the vehicle... how are the shocks/steering stabilizer? |
Re: crazy shudder
ya this is a fun one
front and rear shocks and stabilizer were changed at the start of the winter. the shudder is in the body not the wheel, but it is hard to tell if it goes up and down or side to side. maybe both as it is very violent. |
Re: crazy shudder
have you checked the rear upper ball joint on the back axle... its a long shot, but its usually underlooked... and swaybar links lol
|
Re: crazy shudder
yep ive changed control arms, bushings and balljoint, but not the sway bar bushings.
I guess thats next. its almost a new jeep. i hope this does it |
Re: crazy shudder
use a pry bar to check them, they should be tight, hold the link in the middle, and pry on the bottom, and pry on the top...you should have no wiggle room... i have one bad on my ZJ, and i've got about a half of an inch of wiggle on the drivers side, bottom link...
i get a crazy shake when i hit the bumps... although i dont know if me hitting the brakes makes it go away though |
Re: crazy shudder
thanks very much for the info. I will check it out when I get home next week. man i hope this does it I used to love my GC but now im afraid of ot a little.lol

Re: crazy shudder
Is your Jeep at stock hieght?
|
Re: crazy shudder
no actually it isnt.
I put 2"lifted springs and shocks(when this first started i figured shocks and or stabilizer) so I ordered some up from Rough Country. I couldnt go much taller as my wife is kinda short. |
Re: crazy shudder
Recheck the torque on your track bar and drag link. Make sure your at ride hieght when you tighten them. Minimum is 75 ft/ lbs but you may have go higher. If the bushings are to soft of material you will get side to side slap. Iron rock and Kevin's Offroad both sell super hard bushings. Another thing that may affect it is your stabilizer may be to small now. Moog makes a good heavy duty for a good price.
Last but not least did you use an adjustable track bar? You may be pulling the axle to far to the drivers side now so it's something to check. Let me know how it goes. |
