charge meter

Has anybody had an intermittent charge meter, I watch the gauge move to the left a little and then move back to centre and when I'm not looking a message pops up on the message centre saying check battery, when I look at the meter it's all the way to the left, I try to wiggle wires on generator but nothing, what does work is shutting the truck off and re- starting and then it's fine. Any thoughts!

Re: charge meter

Greetings,
One of the first places I check when faced with intermittent electrical gremlins is the grounding system. Check and clean ALL grounds. Go to Radio Shack or CTC and buy some elecrical contact cleaner (CC) and a tube of di-electric grease(DEG). Access all your connectors (those screwed onto the firewall/fender etc AND those plastic push together types) give them a shot of CC, do and undo the connection a few times, give them a coating of DEG and re-connect. Start in those areas exposed to weather and water (like in the engine compartment for example) first. Check and clean battery connections (both ends), alternator connections (remove, clean, grease and re-assemble) and see if you still have the symptoms.
For the connector rings etc., a cleaning with some sandpaper and cleaning of the terminal or connection point with a small wire brush may be in order as well. You don't have a generator. Do you have a manual yet?
Hope this helps....Peter
