99 GC (WJ) Transmission Issue
Hey all,
Just recently my jeep has underwent a couple transmission problems. The jeep shifts much firmer than before into second, and seems to stay in second until, skipping 3rd and going directly into 4th. It also downshifts very firm as well at unexpected times. None of this happened gradually either. My jeep went from driving/shifting perfectly to this just after being out for lunch. Could anyone offer me some suggestions as to what i can take a look at, or tell my mechanic to focus on, once i can find time to get it in the shop? Thanks alot! Keith |
Re: 99 GC (WJ) Transmission Issue
Drive the vehicle to warm the transmission to normal operating temperature, ck the fluid level, let us know if its okay level wise and not foamy.

Re: 99 GC (WJ) Transmission Issue
also look at the color of your oil, normally it should be a bright to SLIGHTLY dark red...and smell it too, does it smell burnt?...it IS an auto right?
if it just happened suddenly, then chances are it's toast.but very seldom does a tranny just up and let go without any warning signs,example-slippage,erratic shifting etc.... |
Re: 99 GC (WJ) Transmission Issue
The fluid is proper colour/smell/level. I should have added that my check engine light came on as well...
It came up as something to do with a speed sensor. It's @ the shop getting the sensor replaced tomorrow morning. Could it be that it's in limp mode from this faulty sensor? That would explain the odd shift points, correct? I'm hoping for the best! Thanks for the input guys. |
Re: 99 GC (WJ) Transmission Issue
those damn sensors can cause some really weird problems...let us know if it was just that.I hope for you it is the case.
Whatever we can do to help :) |
