2007 GC 3.0l Diesel ETC Warning Light

My Jeep (2007 Grand Cherokee w/3.0l Mercedes diesel) is at the dealership as a result of the Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) illuminating/flashing. The initial diagnosis was carbon build-up as a result of dirty diesel fuel. Prior to a very expensive (estimated $3000 - $7500) repair, they have used some type of chemical cleaner (have tried 3 jugs so far) to clean it out. They asked me to drive the vehicle this weekend to see if there was any improvement.

The dealership Service Manager mentioned that they have now seen 3 similar problems (the other two were apparently much worse than mine) with the Mercedes engine between 125,000 and 140,000km.

Sound familier to anyone? Any suggestions?

Thanks very much!

Our 2008 gc diesel had 95000k and had to have the Swirl Valve Actuator Motor replaced. Swirl valve motor sits just below the turbo and from other sources I have learned that in original form oil from turbo intake drips on this part and eventually because of absorbed oil it jams the linkage and in the process breaks some plastic links. end result a sick sounding engine and 60 km/h even with pedal to floor. We lucked out still had warranty but were told the cdn price of the part was $600.00 plus about 8.5 hrs to install, since then I have found the part on the US Mopar site for less than $300.00 us. Apparently this is quite a common problem on the 300C diesel in europe. Good luck

Thanks so much for your reply; it shed tons of light on my recent difficulties. I had the oil changed at the dealership two weeks before my ETC warning light came on. The oil cap was not put on correctly, resulting in oil being sprayed throughout the engine compartment. Coincidence?

Just for interest sake I looked up the price for the Intake swirl valve actuator motor on the US Mopar site $225.00. Go to Mopar (mopar.com ) select "shop " 2008 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Manifolds, Intake manifold scroll down item #4 is the intake swirl valve actuator motor. Ilooked for a 2007 and it is marked N/A. you will most likley need part #5 also
