2008 liberty stuck in reverse

2008 liberty stuck in reverse
2008 liberty limited with 60000km , 3.7 l
was parked for 3 years , wheels are free spinning sounds like it's half way between park and reverse when it rolls. ( rolled it off the flat deck when I had it towed)
It won't start because dash still says it's in reverse.
console is out and can grab the actual cable and still will not move.
can't seem to locate the linkage on the transmission but maybe I just haven't looked hard enough .
any ideas where to start ?
