77 CJ5 Carter 1-bbl carb float level?

Hi all,

My 77 CJ5 has sat in my garage w/o turning a wheel for 5 years (shame, I know, but I have another Jeep). Anyway, I am moving my house, an now have to move it. It wouldn't start, and I discovered that fuel wasn't reachng the carburetor float bowl, so I pulled the carb and replaced the needle and seat and ureka! it started right up! - trouble is, after running for about 15 seconds, the carb starts pissing gas externally (from where, I can't tell, it's leaking so fast). I don't have much carburetor experience - I am assuming that this is a float adjustment issue and did my best to follow the manufacturers recommendations as to float height, and tried adjusting it a couple of times, but no joy.

At this point, I just want it to run will leaking fuel so that i can get in on the trailer to move it to my new house.

Any advise out there would be appreciated!

Thanks all, and Happy New Year!
Cheers,
Rob

Don't know the evact spec for that carb but as a rough guide it should close the valve when the top of the float is level. My first thought though is that the float might not be floating or that there is some dirt in the needle seat.

Thanks for your thoughts on this. You weren't wrong! I discovered that I had twisted the float somewhat sideways and it was touching the outside of the float bowl. Works a charm now!
Cheers,
Rob
